Do any of you guys go on road trips specifically to visit Banks for old rolls of coins? I have been thinking about trying this. I might call ahead to see if they have any before I blindly drive 50 or 60 miles.
If you have gone on a road trip did it pan out for you?

| Road trips are a good way to find CWR's and maybe some silver. I have done it a few times and would do it more if my schedule allowed. Bring a bucket and a canvas bag. You will need the bag if they have a lot of rolls. Put them in a bucket when you get back to the car. Road trips also allows you a reason to go into many many banks in one day. While you are there, look for coin machines in the lobbies. If you see one, ask if any other branches have machines. This could become a dump bank or a source for bags. Enjoy the trip, have a relaxing lunch , and don't make a rush of it. If you make it a miserable experience you won't want to do it again. |

I love road trips for silver! I think I've done 4 now and I've either broke even or came out anywhere from $20-$170 ahead when the day was over after expenses. Depending on if you are targeting small towns or large cities, the amount of coins you will have to purchase could get costly so bring plenty of cash and have a good dump plan (multiple accounts and save up some CWR wrappers if there isn't a fee free machine on your route) in case you run low on cash. Definitely mapquest your route searching for banks and CU's. There are lots of them off the main roads maybe a block or two over, that I know I would have missed had I not made notes of them. Like Slick said, enjoy the day and have fun with it no matter what the finds yield. Oh, all this only applies if you aren't in Central Alabama. If so then you are wasting your time, there is no such thing as silver around here . |

| I do all my searching from road trips once or twice a week (I work nights which really helps). Sometimes 3 or 4 nearby banks; sometimes a dozen or more and many miles. As Mcprice mentioned I too usually break even or ahead a little after gas, plus I enjoy listening to talk radio and driving on a nice day. But there are definately bad days with little or no silver for a half a tank of gas - just comes with this type of searching, its not for everyone. |

Thanks for the advise guy's.. I happen to have a job that sends me out of town quite frequently. I mostly work weekends and evenings which lends lots of time to this hobby. I don't keep track of how much gas I spend because I get reimbursed for the mileage which more than makes up for the gas. I have thought about just calling ahead to see if the banks have any halves to begin with. That could eliminate a lot of driving around. I use Google Maps and have it list the banks only. Makes it very convenient.
My first week of searching actually occurred on a road trip. That is how I became addicted to this hobby. I'm actually dreaming about it now.. I had a dream last night that I was at a bank and the teller told me she did not have any halves but she had some old dollar coins if I was interested. I said yes and snagged a 1871 Trade Dollar.. Talk about Dreaming!! |

I tend to make a road trip out of every trip. No matter where I am, I try to hit up a few banks. |

when I found this forum I made a road trip the next day. I got 1 90% half 3 40% halves. Don`t come to LA. looking there are none. I think they all flew north, since I have checked every bank every 3 days here.
GOOD LUCK HUNTING |
