Had my second dealings with a Craigslist seller yesterday and i think i did quite well. The gentleman was pretty low key through emails and for a while I simply thought he was getting better offers. Turned out when we met in his home town, that he was getting a stream of emails from collectors asking about the dates and possible pictures of his collection. This turned him off and even frustrated him from selling.

The ad started simply by saying i have $30 dollars in wheats take them for $1 a roll, and you must take all the pennies, but aside from them you can also buy what you like from the remaining collection.

I am not much of a collector aside from pennies. but i told him what the heck bring it all and if the price is right maybe i'll buy from his collection.

So i hop into the car drive about an hour south of my house meet the guy at a restaurant. He procedes to pull out box specially designed to hold some 80 or so plastic coin tubes. (keep in mind no dates were mentioned in the add). The dates run but was not complete 1909-1970 with each tube mint specific. He had a list that he showed me coming to about $15 worth of coins in that box. He then had a cigar box with more rolls and plastic tubes that brought the total to around $30 in rolls.

the best part about these rolls was about 70% of the coins are red or even BU.

He wanted 2 cents a coin and i happily agreed.

This having been completed we went into the restaurant we went to look at the remaining collection.

with a lot of small talk and chatting about how i'm just starting up and he was looking to give these away to someone like me i ended up purchasing all of his collection.

a quick run down:

1939 D nickel
10 bufs all with dates you can read

Hello. Nice deal!

The "maria tular 1780" you refer to is not a fake, it is what is termed a "restrike". It is a 1780 Maria Theresa Thaler, first struck in 1780 and the Austrian Mint restrikes the same date to this day. It is silver, and sell for in the $12-16 range.

Our word "dollar" is derived from the word "thaler".

Hope that helps!

Beat me to it CoastalEdge! I just picked up Maria Theresa Thaler a week or so ago. A very nice coin!

Are you throwing that out?

The total collection cost me 112 dollars. I don't think i could have done any better if i gave him a flat offer for the lot at the start. Also i really wasn't interested in anything other than the pennies at the start. thanks for the info. The Maria tular is in very nice condition which is great.

I mean, it is possible that the Maria Thaler is a fake, of base metal, not silver,

But as just mentioned, more than likely it is a real silver 'restrike'

Test it with a magnet and the 'ring' test. if it sounds right and doesn't stick to magnet, it IS probably a good silver one.

it rang true the one time i tested it. But the coin is BU so i didn't really want to mess with it too much.

sounds like you got your money's worth with just some of the key date Lincoln's... the rest is gravy. It's nice to have a Thaler, restrike or not, nice reverse on them

Hoard now and hold on!
