I saw a new bin on the counter at the coin store today. It was for pre-1960 Jefferson nickels. These were all circulated and no special dates (all 1940's and 1950's) and no war nickels
They were selling theirs for 15 cents a piece. Was kind of surprised.

I would sell mine for that price also. That show that others are thinking that those pre-60 are starting to be worth something. |

Hmmm, and to think that I've been throwing them all back into the wild...

It seems that they are getting harder and harger to find. I just went through $40 bucks and only found 13. |

I seem to find more in customer wrapped rolls than plastic bank rolls. |

Got 13 last night. I have been keeping mine. Got 2 39's and one 50 in the bunch last night. Every time I get those dates I say a little prayer and slowly flip it over. Never works...:( |

At a coin show about a month ago, there also was a dealer that had a box of pre-60 nickels he had priced at .15 each. He said they were the common dates...no WT or key dates. |

cwgii, You should ask him to sell his pre-1960's for you at face then; my dealer will sell me any pre-1982 pennies he gets in at face value; granted it is usually only at $1 increments; less sorting for me though :-) |

I don't do nickels very much, but I keep anything older than about 1970. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Hm, an interesting test would be to throw a few rolls on eBay. That will show us if there is a market for it! |

I've only casually been collecting for about a month, but I have about $60 face (30 rolls) of nickels. I always pull the pre-70's, too, and roll them separately. So far, I've only gotten two rolls.
Of those, the oldest I've been able to find is a 1940, and only one war nickel, a 1944.
I don't know a whole lot about it, but it seems surprising. Can only be a good thing in the long term, though, if you're one of the ones collecting.
And, barrytrot suggested putting some on eBay. I did just that, with coins dating from 1960-1970, some of them S mintmarks. Got a watcher, but no hits. Probably not old enough...might generate some interest if they were pre-'64.
Also, something I'm noticing, most pre-'70 nickels I'm finding are dated 1964. Anyone else getting this same result? Did they mint more '64's than the other years? |

I believe 1964 was a big mint year for nickels (I see a lot of '64 pennies too), though I'm not sure why. I doubt if any nickels after 1964 will carry nuimismatic value in the forseeable future . . . aside from perhaps a rare mint mark or some type error. |

They made un imaginable amounts of 1964 nickels. They are so common that I usually get two per roll!!! |

They made more nickels in 1964 than they did in the rest of the 60's combined. Possibly they made them because of the switch from silver to clad coins was causing a coin shortage, they made a ton of every denomination that year. The years after 64 they actually made fewer nickels per year than the years before 64. You must be logged in to see this link.
I have been finding a pre-1960 every two or three rolls. |

Went to the coin show in Deland, Florida on Friday and there was one dealer there that had bags of Pre-60 Jefferson nickels, no war nickels. He was selling, or trying to sell, $4.00 face value for $5.00.
