I bought a couple of boxes of pennies today. I opened one box and found that all 50 rolls held absolutely NO coppers! Is this odd or are the coppers flying out of circulation that quickly???

It happens occasionally. You may have gotten a box that had already been "cleaned" by another copper hoarder in your area. Are there any other hoarders in your area? What area of the country are you in?
If you get a few rolls out of a box that have no coppers in them it is bast to sort the rest of the box by the roll with a digital scale. If they don't weigh more than 126 grams you don't need to waste your time opening and rerolling them.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

| I live in Greensboro, North Caroina and I am not really sure of any other hoarders in my area. I just thought that was kind of wierd. And frustrating as well. Thanks for the response! |

I would guess you are about 3rd person that has posted as having found a box or boxes like this. So far it seems to be a fairly rare occurrence (knock on wood), but I suspect it is only a matter of time before we all start seeing this.
The thing that I have tried to do is to build up a small stash of reserve boxes by ordering a bit more than I plan to sort. That way when you get hit with these boxes or hit with boxes of UNC 2007's, you have something to fall back on.
I currently have about a week's supply of extra boxes on hand that have all been pre-weighed and guaranteed to contain 30%+ copper. So even if a week's worth of my buying was a total wash, I can still keep sorting. |

Fortunately I have never gotten one of these dud boxes, but I have got stuck with 2007's a few times though. I agree with horgad that you should build up a small stash of reserve boxes so you have some on hand to sort when you get skunked. I have about a week's supply on hand also. Mine only contain 20% copper so I have to stash a few more boxes than him.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Sorry to hear about that, 2ndAmendmentGuy. (Nice name by the way.)
I get these boxes all too often. It really takes the fun out of it, doesn't it?
Nevertheless, there are still plenty of killer boxes out there. Don't let a few zincs ruin the whole penny hoarding experience for you. Good luck on your next one!

My boxes all weigh out well within the 25% range. What gets me is how consistent they are. It's almost like someone pack them that way.

Whats scary is that just happened to me today in Michigan. 10/31 $5.00 CWR Chase Bank 79 coppers 3 canadian (1 was copper) 7 82's (1 was zinc) 15.8% Copper
Thats terrible where I live. When I started it was a 22.8% avg. going up to a high of 37% coppers a batch last time to 15.8%. I fear this maybe coming up with our copper pennies. I had a couple rolls with just 2 coppers! There was also something like $20 of the same rolls I didnt buy too. |

Well there are a couple of pretty serious sorters in Michigan. But I thought Michigan was 29-30% country, not 23%.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

| I know its really odd. I have gotten 25-30% in the past but now its lagging a little. This weekend I'm going to stop at some different banks and hope for the best. |
