For a really cheap stove, their used to be a guy on ebay who sold stoves made out of coke cans cut and welded up. Super light weight and can burn run of the mill 99 cent ethanol. I have backpacked with one many times and they are super light, super cheap, and easy as pie to fuel.

I know monetarily its not the easiest option, but hand pump water filters are really ideal. Refill water in morning before you break camp, stop middday if you need more. Cuts down on weight, and is faster than say waiting for a gallon of water to boil and cool. I have a really small hand pump water filter that I have used in some seriously nasty water with no problems. And it is super lightweight.

As for cover, the tarp idea works well. I usually pack a few bungy cords to help set up, and that along with small stakes and some 550 cord you are all set.

While not the tastiest option, ramen noodles are dirt cheap and light weight. Take them out the packages ahead of time, crush them a bit and jam a bunch of them into a larger ziplock. Again super easy and cheap. Snickers bars are great and cheap for energy boosts and they have a nice chunk of calories, which helps as well.

I will also reiterate that water is the biggest issue. Dehydration can occur rapidly, and almost unknown. I backpacked not to far back with a buddy of mine who really wasnt used to doing so, and after the first full day or so he had one of those killer dehydration head aches, he hadnt been drinking water all day because he said "I dont feel thirsty". But that hot sun, sweating, and exertion takes a toll quickly. It cost us an entire day of sitting around while he got rehydrated.

Good luck man, and enjoy. I think one of the single best ways to learn about yourself is to spend a good chunk of time outdoors, pushing your body and mind to find their limits.

I'd bring a small flashlight instead of the emergency candles. Unless the candles are in a candle lantern the slightest breeze will blow them out.

ANyone have objections to the BB gun?

I am trying to think of something that would work, but be innocent enough for people to not worry too much.

Wrist Rocket slingshot with some nice steel shot. A little practice and you'll be good to go. You can take game with it easily. Better than a BB gun if you ask me. Unless you get a real fancy one, but those are expensive. If you really want to take a BB gun, get one that's a pump so you will not have to worry about running out of gas.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

A wrist rocket is a great weapon. Steel shot is good too. But a big round rock...WOP!

Definately more power than a BB gun
