Hi everyone. Every once in a while, it seems as though someone finds a really cool old silver coin here while hunting...I'm talking V nickels, buffalo nickels, barber dimes, mercury dimes, barber quarters, standing liberty quarters, barber halves, walking liberty halves, and Benjamin Franklin halves. I have yet to find any of these coins, with the exception of one V nickel and 4 buffalo nickels (none of which were found recently). I'd really love to find a barber anything, mercury dime, walker half, or Franklin half. I have only found 10 '64 JFK 90% halves to date, despite over $3k face sorted. As far as dimes and halves go, I have yet to find a coin older than '46(dimes) or '64(halves). I know a lot of people say to go the cwr route...unfortunately, due to banks in this area getting ripped off one too many times (I think), all banks that I've ever been to require all rolls turned in (cwr OR mwr/bwr) to be opened before they are fed into the coin counter. Of course, I can always ask at some of my newer banks that I haven't been with very long...anyways sorry for the long post, I'm just looking for any suggestions that might improve my chances of pulling an oldie. Don't worry, I still get silver often, but it's always Roosies or 40% JFK halves....

| I'm with you. I have yet to find the really good stuff. The best finds I have ever gotten before were the 9 IH's in the two boxes, but other than that, I have not found any really stunning stuff. But I don't give up! I'm sure there are some really cool coins waiting for me out there. |

Its seems that the most effective way to find these to increase quantity. The members that you see finding tons of silver and finding the old stuff are sometimes sorting $2000 per week in halves. The best solution is just sort more |

My brother and I are in a NASTY funk with Franklins and Walkers. Only one Franklin this year out of 74 silver halves found...Nov/Dec 2009 only 1 Walker and 2 Bens out of 143 silver halves. Some of the Franklin and Walker finds to me are absolutely stunning...I just wish I knew how some of the guys pull it off.
I'm with G Powerbuck...I truly think it is just about increasing quantity. Outside of that (and LUCK) I just don't think there is any real solid answer to your question.
One thing that I might add...I keep very good data of my finds relative to what bank/branch they came from and more importantly (to me) keeping track of the coding (facility/date codes/4-digit codes, etc.) of the boxes I search. For example...last year I was doing great with boxes from a particular CWI facility with a particular October packing date...they always produced!!! I know lots of times we can't be too picky/choosey over what we get to sort, but when you can find a pattern of good boxes (note the box specs), those are the first boxes I would seek out.

No offense but $3k is not that much when you are looking for non-JFK's.
I have sorted almost 20K this year and found 3 Walkers and 7 Franklins.
Alot of it is volume, but I found the majority of my Walkers (2) and Franklins (4) from 1 teller encounter.
Take that out of the equation and you are looking at 1 old coin per 5K sorted.
You might want to scrounge banks for loose halves. You have a lot of teller AG hunters, but sometimes you get lucky.

Thanks for the replies everyone....March is gonna be a lean month for me $$ wise, so I may not be able to sort that much... . Cecropia-I'm with you on that one. I have a new bank that ALWAYS produces!! I have yet to be skunked silver wise with them, and only had 1 half skunk out of 5 or 6 branches!! Their half and dime boxes always produce at least 1 or 2 silver coins. I got my best find earlier this week from a coin counting machine (22 silver JFK's, 3 of which were 90%ers). I almost didn't go, as when they said on the phone it was in the coin counting machine in a bag I thought for sure it was someone's dumps....boy was I glad I decided to go!! I will keep searching halves as often as I can, and ordering whole boxes whenever I can get the extra $$. That's the tricky part for me, trying to find an extra $500 to 1k to play with... |

I have searched well over $100,000 in halves. Oldest one to date. A 1964.
I have had tellers show me Frankins and Walkers that they got from customers. There are sooo many others doing the same thing we are doing, so finding any silver is a good thing.

| My 50cents worth, is just keep trying. You won't find anything unless you look. And my take on some of the wonderful finds I have seen here posted, is that they just got lucky. I got very lucky one day not too long ago when a teller told me she had a bag from her counting machine full of old quarters --- I had not asked, she just knew I was often asking about coins. What can I do to find that 1853-O seated liberty half? Nothing; just get lucky. Set your expectations very low. This is a hobby that by definition MUST have diminishing rewards over time. Set your expecations low, keep looking, and hope you get lucky. I think your (and my) odds of finding a seated liberty half are much better than winning a lottery. And I can't spend the reject lottery tickets for gas ---- |

| I do $3000 a week in mixed coin and I do not find any older coins, but a good number of silver. So my answer is more volume. I only use $500 to search at a time normally, but I have a buy and dump bank for each day of the week. That allows me to increase the volume without overloading any one source or dump bank. |

| So order more and feed the counters. Thats what they are there for. I plan to do 100k in halves alone this year. I find walkers and bens, but in my opinion a 64 ken is worth as much as a walker or ben because most I find are close to cull status. On a rare occasion you might find a barber, seated, or key date walker half and thats gravy for the top. You gotta keep your eyes on the goal, pull as much silver as you can as quickly as you can. If you like the old stuff, use your proceeds from your silver you find to buy them. |

I thus far have searched about $12,000 worth this year and that has yeilded;
70 40% 20 90% JKF's 15 Franklins 8 walkers 1 Seated liberty
These are all randomly scatered through various boxes. One of my banks almost always produces. the second bank hardly produces 1-2 40%per box. However, the seated liberty came from that second bank.
I think the key to finding silver is volume. You can try and better your odds, however, you can only do so much.
I get a large sampling of banks, because I am downtown of a major metropolitan area. So I have two banks suppling me $2000 total per week and I ask for halves at every bank I pass. There are about 20-30 banks within a couple blocks of my office. So I keep a few hundred dollars in my pocket for searching.
My goal for the year is $52,000 searched. I am not sure if I can physically carry any more than one box per night on the subway! |
