Scrappers and scrapyards have never appeared to be the most compliant sorts when it comes to buearocratic BS IMO. Perhaps a better was of asking the question is this. How high will copper have to go before there is mass disobedience?
Copper and scrapyards already have a murky past. Much of the copper wire that gets turned in, at least around here, is still burned (another no-no).
My guess is when copper shoots up a lot, there will be a LOT of scrappers ignoring the melt ban. I suspect we have a bit of deflation to go before that day gets here though.
I'm not looking for anyone to out themselves here, but I am curious as to what others think

I'm sure a company would love to lose it's license, pay thousands in fee's for a few bucks in scrapping pennies. |

I always love it when the scrap yard gives you a copper penny in change when they do their pay out :-) |

Yeah, in most areas now with all the added red tape for those selling the scrap etc, I doubt the scrap yards are going to push their luck unless the deal was worth thousands....ie one or 10 tons of copper cents.
But then it wouldn't just involve the scrapper but the smelter as well. YOu would have to conceal or hide all those pennies amongst your legitimate copper. Not that easy I would guess. |

I think that the ban would have to be lifted before mass melting would take place. |

Supposedly there's tonnes of pennies being sent to Mexico mixed in with shipping container loads of scrap and the Cu is being returned to U$ in the form of Bathtubs, Sinks and Fountains. But, that's all hearsay any gossip. Probably not reliable information at all! |

I can't see a scrap yard wanting to buy copper coins since they have to send it off to a refiner who in turn would be taking the real risk in melting them. But let's consider a small mom & pop company who makes brass items. What realistically is going to stop them? |

I am sure someone is doing it on a small scale. I doubt that any local run of the mill scrap yard is buying any. If it is being done on a large scale, it is being done by some big shots who are making big dollar handshakes in the shadows. |

You and I have heard the same gossip- a ton of pennies "salted" in a container would hardly get noticed. |

I have heard the same thing, specifically about Texas. May help to explain some of the lower copper percentages in the border states. |
