on 2/9 our neighborhood water utility spent the work day flushing out the pipes. we were informed ahead of time. therefore i took precautions to make sure i had enough water for the day. i, personally was not fond of drinking water that may be rustic. so i took the day to practice water conservation.
i already had a gallon of water for myself. in the morning when i washed my face, and brushed my teeth, i decided to use my filtered water. i took a plastic 12 oz. tumbler and filled it up part way with filtered water and went to the bathroom. once there, i poured some water into one palm and wet my face. then a little more water to wash and lather my hands and face with soap. a third and fourth time i poured carefully measured water and rinsed my face. i still had enough water in my cup.

brushing my teeth was interesting. i took the cup of water and measured about an ounce into a dixie cup. i put my toothbrush in the cup to rinse it. i applied 'paste and poured a little of the dixie cup water over my pasted toothbrush. i brushed my teeth. when it came time to rinse i measured water from my 12 oz cup to the dixie cup. this way i would not contaminate water that could later be used for drinking. in the end my toothpaste would have to wait a little longer to completely rinse out, i did try though, because i had applied a little too much toothpaste.

My apartment building had the water shut off most of the business day a couple weeks ago so that the maintenance workers could try to find the source of a leak. Well, since I work nights, I woke up at about 2:30, went to the kitchen to brew my first pot of coffee but when I turned on the faucet at the sink, it hissed for a moment and then stopped dead. So while I was dialing my landlord to see if there was a plumbing issue, I grabbed a couple half-liter bottles from my emergency water stash (currently about 30 gallons--need to get more this weekend) and brewed my coffee using that. Glad I had it on hand--otherwise I'd have been choking down dry coffee grounds!

Actually Caridad, I don't eat straight coffee grounds, although if I'm having a caffeine emergency, I've been known to eat coffee beans right out of the bag. But since I drink about four pots of coffee a day anyway, it takes a whole lot more than just a few coffee beans to give me a caffeine buzz!

Well, with four pots a day to me that would mean that I would be spending 23.5 hours standing infront of the toilet.........ufffffffff only one cup in the morning is plenty for me.

There was a program on the TeeVee some years ago about long distance ocean sailing and they mentioned conserving fresh water. One of the sailors said he didn't use any water brushing his teeth, just his own spit. If I remember correctly, he also shaved with salt water.

washing and rinsing in bath water is the ultimate in water conservation. 100 years ago while crossing the atlantic people would bathe in salt water. only the upper class could afford to rinse off in fresh water.
