Many folks have been worried about various aspects of the economy. Worries about their savings, job security, the value of the dollar, the bailouts, housing forclosures, depressed real estate markets, food price increases, trade deficits, possible inflation, the value of the 401K, stock market declines etc.

Worrying about these things can sometimes lead to depression. I heard of one guy that was so overwrought by all this that he called a suicide hotline. Of course with job outsourcing his call was routed out of the country. He was connected to the call center in Pakistan. They got all excited talking with him. They asked "Can you drive a truck?"

I don't think about it that much. If I am a little depressed over the whole situation, I resort to sorting large amounts of pennies. Best cure for depression and to find inner happiness. Happiness is a warm brick of pennies.

I don't even think about the economy, jobs ect anymore, being retired, it's the least of my problems.Actually, I don't have any problems, retired, debt free,in great health, just turned 70. I do think about the days when a person in America could quit their job and have another one in an hour though. when the family farms left, so did everything else.
I've been preparing for real bad times since about 1955, right after we got over the last hard times.
I once had a friend who said when asked how things were would say, "great, if they were any better, I couldn't stand it, I would probably commit suicide or something".

My birthday's in April too, Ponce.
You should not think that family is a bad thing, you know. What do you mean, "Suck out my life and cash?" Family should be a joy for you, don't you think?

I do get depressed about it, mostly because the people I care about won't listen or take precautions. I was thinking about it, though...the precautions we take today can really help people in the coming crisis. If paper currencies fail, our hoarded coins can literally save our local community. We become the real banks, providing a secure medium of trade that allows our friends and neighbors to get the supplies they need to survive. I think about the Civil War, and how all coin disappeared from circulation, right down to their coppers. Tokens and scrip will be issued backed by OUR stockpiles. Our silver and copper will prevent starvation and crimes of desperation. We are the ones who will step up as the crisis unfolds and trade our real money with the people who will need our foresight. Think of your destiny and how you will be a local leader and hero because you had the wisdom and initiative to take action now. Faith is what is needed to prevent depression. Faith in our better natures, faith in our ability as free people to overcome our future obstacles. There's only so much we can control; and worry won't add a day to my life. I read the book "The Richest Man in Babylon" a while back, and I printed out a quote that I keep handy...

"Have I the soul of a slave, or the soul of a free man? The soul of a free man looks at life as a series of problems to be solved and solves them, while the soul of a slave whines 'What can I do who am but a slave?' In this world you will have troubles. Where the determination is, the way can be found."

I watched the movie "Dear John" with my wife recently, and it cast a rather negative stereotype on coin collectors. But when the collector passed away, his son was able to sell the collection and use it for a most noble cause, one that certainly redeemed the man in my eyes. His obsession, while it alienated his family, was of real value and was used for much good. A neat little parable for those with eyes to see and ears to hear.

I don't yet have kids yet, Ponce, but I definitely want one in my future. The thought of raising my own son or daughter and teach him or her all about my coin hobby is just heart warming. I would like to sort pennies all day with my future kids, that way I could get a little company while extracting the coppers.

I'm sure it is. Only thing worse to Ponce than a fat wife and a child, would be a Zionist fat wife with a mini-Zionist child. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Plain and simple.

Hahahahahahaah big deal, you are killing me........and don't forget the mother in law that will be living with us and the father in law banging his head against the garage door while praying hahaahahahahahahaha.

Kirkland? (and everyone else) be sure that you have only the kids that you can afford......think of the future of this country and as to what is going on and will be going on, don't think only of you and the (I want) as wanting kids but of the kids themselves and what kind of future awaits for them........will they be free or slaves? will they have food to eat? will they afford a mate and kids?.......that why I think of a plan, behind the plan, behind the plan, because one thing affects everything else.

In the long run we are all dead, Ponce. You can't take life too seriously.. you'll never get out of it alive.

You guys are taking this way too seriously. You need to go back and carefully reread the last paragraph of my initial post on this thread.

Don't want to get depressed from all the negative news? Use the "Brick's" cure. Get on the phone and cancel the newpaper delivery and axe the cable. Then unplug the TV, carry it up to the attic and throw it out the window, watch it obliterate on your driveway (I did these just before my son was born). Man, did it feel good to do. It felt like FREEDOM!

Stock your library and read instead. Zyll, Richest Man In Babylon was the first book I read for personal improvement. I reccomend it highly.

For litterally the last 20 years, everytime I've seen someone reading the newspaper (other than sports section) I ask "Anything good happen in the world today"? Only one person ever said yes, a local polititian got caught taking bribes and was going to jail. The person was of the other political party of the polititian. I thought of starting a "good news" paper. Filled with stuff like "Local Fire Department Saves Mrs O'Leary's Cat from Tree". But was assured by those I asked about "good happening in the world" that it would never sell.

If you don't want your brain filled with all the depressing stuff in the news (ITS ALL NEGATIVE) don't let it enter your brain. Better yet is to start filling your head with POSITIVE stuff. I could suggest books on tape or other positive productive things you could listen to while driving, jogging, sorting, sleeping, just for starts. Nightingale Conant has a ton of great stuff if you need an example of other positive productive things.

Just my more than 2 cents worth.

For years people told me "don't get married." I never understood why they would say that. Then I got married. Now I understand.

Uthminsta, glad you said something first....
I just have to add:
I LOVE my wife and KIDSSSSS.

Without them I might would start feeling down, but with them I can't go a week....not even a day without being cheered up by them!
I have four kids, 5, 3, 1 and one in the oven!! ;)

And my way of looking at it is this, what's the use of having just one kid, two is better, but four and me is a sports team!! Lucky me I have 3 boys so far, maybe will be 4! And if the SHTF they can take care of each other....safety in numbers and blood is thicker than hard times!

Love you guys, but anyone who thinks a wife and kids is a burden has never been there in a healthy relationship, taking responsibility, manning up and being a strong head of household.

Oh, and we don't have a TV either!!!!! ;D

I love my son. We were married 13 years before we had him. Now another 7 years has gone by and I wish we had more. Now we can't. It is what it is. I suppose my family is "sucking the life and cash" out for me.

It is my privilege, a gift from God to be able to provide 'life and cash' for them to suck.

With proper planning the check paying for my carcasus' cremation will bounce and that will be the only check I've ever bounced.

Let's find out the truth of the matter in years to come, wolvesdad? by saying that I don't want kids I am taking responsibility because I know why I am saying that.....after all, who knows me better than myself?

When I had a wife she had a house, a car, a college degree and a warm bed......I did all that working as a machinest.......it was my "responsibility" to be the head of the family and to do that for her.

I can only hope for the best for those having kids, specially young rugrats like wolvesdad. I am pretty sure that have he known what is going to happen he would had waited a few more years to see which way the wind blows before having 4 kids.....you have to think not only about the kids but also for the kids before having them.

I can see in the near future where at the high shcool level they will be thought how to be law enforcement agents, security guards and prison guards...after all, those FEMA prisons will required a lot of guards.

And may God bless the children of today for they will be the future of tomorrow.

Me? I have to think about my little female cat who now thinks that shes my wife...in my last will and testament she will be getting $50,000, the male cat was getting the same ammount but some wild animal got to him first.

Ponce? (I'm doing this like you. Whenever you are responding to someone's question you write their name and put a question mark beside it.) I am the same age as wolvesdad, but neither of us are "young rugrats." I see you have a cynical view on family, but that should not effect us. Too many kids nowadays are so involved with TV, video games, and not enough fun and learning things. Once I become a parent, I will make sure none of my kids turn into that type of Average Joe kid. I will teach my kids how to prosper in life and have real fun while doing so.

Edit for Grammar.
