From the story:
"Central bank operatives said they were closely coordinating with banks for information on people who were exchanging large amounts of bills for coins." |

Remember, they got your picture on camera too.

Heh - if the gestapo askes the local branches here about "people exchanging large amounts of bills for coins" I'll bet I'm top of the list. |

C.N., somehow they will try to tie it in with illegal drugs. Like the pushers are laundering their dope money with pennies and nickels.

LOL. Hardly. Can you imagine the logistics involved in paying for a secret drug shipment in coin? Like "Thank you for the small briefcase of powder, Mr. Escobar. Here is your shipping container full of zinc pennies. I hope you brough a big truck." |

maybe unrelated to this topic of discussion, but the other day, i told the bank teller that i use all those pennies for a school art project after she asked me why do i need so many pennies; from now on, i have to visit the branches of my bank once every month; luckily i have about 5-10 branches to be included into the rotation, same for returning sorted coins too, but the excuse would be that i inherited all those pennies and nickels from my granddad; and i always try to be the most polite i can be when i ask for coins, "you don't have to give me all the 30 rolls of pennies if you don't have them" tellers are more eager to help you out if you talk like that; i also plan to buy a box of ferrero rochere to give to the branch who always help me with coins, i consider that part of the investment :)

I tell them to their face that I'm hoarding the good coins. They need a wakeup call. Also, I don't consider it a "favour" from them - they are chartered banks, and therefore required by law to provide the service equally to all citizens (thanks to the charter of rights and freedoms). So screw 'em.
Hey - I have a question - how many male bank tellers have you delt with in the past 10 years? I've only ever seen two, one here at TD, and one at a Scotia branch in Ottawa. All the others are female. What's the deal with that? |

Low pay. Unfortunately, women are more likely to take these lower paying jobs, while the male seem to be promoted quicker to the loan departments it seems to me. |

male tellers to female tellers is about 50:50 ratio here in Vancouver
to "recap", i have a few lies to pass around if tellers ask me questions:
if they ask me why i need so much coins, i tell them i am building a structure out of pennies and nickels, becasue they are heavy per unit, and that's what i can afford; or i can tell them that i have a family of coin collectors who like to go through coins for errors, key dates, and/or other unusualities, etc
when i return searhed coins to a different bank, if they ask why i have so much coins, i would tell them that i have a uncle, father, and a grandfather, all collecting coins, they ask me to return their searched coins;
if the gov pass bills to stop minting and/or using pennies and nickels as regular currency, i will have to open a business account to "buy" more coins at their face
on a side note, tellers' starting salary is about 12 bucks an hour, not very bad for a temp job |

I was thinking of saying that I am getting pennies for my childrens coin albums. Then I thought, why do I need an excuse to exchange one form of currency for another? |

When I collect the pennies, I tell the truth. Most people think it's ridiculous. The tellers I work with actually help me, and even sort their loose change for me. I stopped getting my weekly Brinks boxes for the short term after receiving 2 boxes of almost all new pennies. The tellers I get the pennies from call me any time someone brings in penny rolls. I always ask for the person's name so if it's a bad batch that's been presorted I won't ever get the rolls they return again.
My biggest issue is turning the zinc pennies back in. The bank branches I've been going to for turning in the rolls, haven't been real nice about it. I will probably turn in $100 in zinc pennies this Friday. |
