It seems that somewhere in these forums I read something about red pennies or some such thing. I have been finding some pennies that have a red tint to them. Some look almost as if they'd been painted. Are these worth saving separately?
I have always heard "not worth a red cent", etc but do not think that is a related thing. I googled "red cent" and found only references to the old phraseology, but nothing about pennies that are actually red in color.
thx.

| I think I found it. So, they are not really red at all, but just what I would call multi-colored (like a sheen of oil on water). I have found a number of pennies like that and have been throwing those back into the pot for a return trip to the bank. Guess I will start keeping some of those. Thx. -js |

That description sounds like "Rainbow Toning" which usually brings a premium when selling silver.
I don't know how it affects the price of cents.
I keep all BU specimens of copper cents with rainbow toning.
Just because I like them |

Thogey...I, too, like the pennies that have rainbow toning on them, but have been told by several dealers that it is not considered desirable in pennies like it is in silver coins.
Perhaps that will change in the future.
Dixiebooks...according to my Red Book for the Lincoln cents it states for a MS-65 the coin will show no trace of wear. Barely noticeable blemishes. Nearly full red color.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

| I keep them seperate now, but only because I hand sort and it is no extra effort. Same thing with S-mints. Both of which seem to be carrying a higher premium in bulk lots versus the average brown cent. I do not keep Red/Brown cents in this pile though, only the best. |
