I think the vast majority come from someone died and relative cashed in their hoard. Lesser amounts (but still significant) would be your circulation/escaped detection and stolen property angles.

In the case of half dollars since they are not in circulation I can see vast numbers of old bags sitting in Treasury/Federal Reserve vaults.

All of the above. Primarily dead peoples hoard and theft, but some ignorance. Some people just don't know what it is worth so if they are given one they might just spend it.

the 40% I think are more apt to have been in circulation...most people know the before 1964 rule....the 40%ers are an exeption to the rule

I think a lot of silver probably goes back and forth between brief circulation and long periods in change jars without getting noticed. All it takes is for someone to dump the day's change in the jar without looking and it could be there for years. When I find a single circulated looking silver dime in a roll of recent coins, I figure it has probably changed hands at least a few times since anyone last noticed what it was. Other ones obviously have spent very little time in circulation since leaving the hands of someone who knew their value and stored them properly.

All of the above - or the Silver Santa.

If you have noticed the same. Recently I have seen an increase recently. I think some are also related to people breaking open thier piggy banks to make ends meet. They turn in all they have and don't know they have been hoarding real money.

When I was young my mother she saved half dollars. Every week she would put 1-3 into a bank. The bank is still there and she filled it up by 1970. Any idea what is in there? She has threatened to turn it into the bank. I have told her there is more real money in it than in her 401K. She thinks I am nuts, but there it sits, just taunting me.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

A little bit of all. I think a lot of people don't go to the effort to find a dealer if they've only got a few.

A lot of coin collections are raided by kids and spent. I can't see many logical reasons to see a Franklyn in circulation these days. Of course as fb101 said, a little bit of it all could be the reasons.

Mostly I would say from stolen, relative dieing, child snaking from parents stash. Bank tellers tell me people coming in at the end of the month cashing in rolls has increased many fold. Guess where I am at the end of the month??

kids, house cleaners, baby sitters grab a dime here and a quarter there, moving company personal who work hard for minimum wage and pick up what they can get away with, a few silver quarters means nothing to a chain smoker when they're out.

I think most come from dead or incapacitated elders' coin jars. But when I first started this obcession a few years back, I got some beautiful AU Franklins that still had rubber cement on the backs out of a box --- so at least some come from grandkids raiding the old man's collection for candy money. I don't think silver halfs have been in circulation undetected, because the silver quarters by contrast are almost all gone. Dimes are harder to recognize, but the size of the quarter and the half are big enough to make a noticable difference to the causual eye. Quarters circulate, and are almost devoid of silver. Halfs don't circulate much, and a few silver ones dumped from the elder's coin jar show up. Or so I think.
