Sometimes I drive around seeing things that are thrown out as trash that I would love to pick up on people's front curves. This AM I saw a hot water heater sitting on the front curb. Unfortunately, I drive a 4 door car and have no room for big items. It kills me when I see stuff like that because I would love to pick it up and scrap it. Guess I need to make sure the next vehicle is a TRUCK. :-)

Would that be cost effective though hooking a trailer to the car and driving around with it attached? I'd think it would eat up gas with more weight.

Yeah, I miss my truck. I wrecked it last year and haven't been able to replace it yet.

Are you throwing that out?

13 appliances on average make one ton of junk. A pickup truck with a 5x10 trailer can haul 2.5 tons of scrap to the yard and be in compliance with the law. With that volume you can expect to also have about 100 lbs of alum copper etc. from proper cleaning of the items. I have found that the trailer ads very little to the cost of fuel as these vehicles are designed to haul.

Most bbq today are made of cast aluminum. In the case of someone without a truck it is very easy to pull over and snap the lid right off the top of these units and put them inside your trunk. Also stopping and sniping electrical cords is easy and can be placed in your trunk. Insulated wire!
Primary tools: Nice 20oz claw hammer, nice heavy duty pry bar, nice snips, nice 36" bolt cutters

There are usually rental places around that will rent you a truck and or any of seveveral types of trailors (utility, flatbed w/ winch etc.)

Or in this economy, if you have a friend with a truck and some cash... or cut them in for a percentage.

Check craigslist for free in your area, make a preset route, and make a day out of it.

Happy hunting.

I used to rely on my best friends when I needed a truck or a boat...now I have 3 trucks one with a lift gate...I have felt that need, it is nice to be able to pickup and toss in the back. You are welcomed to use anytime...I am scrapping some drums today at lunch after that it is available.

There is some coppper and brass that you can remove then the rest goes in as scrap steel. Steel by me is now paying 6.5 cents a pound.

I drive a mini van for work. I have often thought of picking up appliances and taking them home. I have a personel jeep and trailer that I could haul to the yard with once I got a load.

That said, my wife would kill me. There are several HUGE junk piles out back of my barn that she wants me to get rid of already. I should start taking a load every Saturday morning. I could put some coin in my pocket and good will in with my wife.

Scrap rises and falls in a very cyclical pattern. The growing demands upon the metal recycling business become larger every year. Scrap yards take advantage and often contribute to the consistent cyclical pattern.
China buys 50% of all global steel produced! (hence: my questioning cash for clunkers legitimacy)They also have to import more copper than they would like. It is their desire to have "more". They are on a global mission to secure long term contracts for precious metals. 1.3 billion people only roughly a third in major cities, the rest still in the fields but trending to the urban areas. This need to fulfill its populace is at the heart of economic global change.

It is ironic that our leftovers from the boom time will be the catalyst to a major shift.

Two of the best investments I purchased last year were an '86 Chevy Silverado K10 and a 5x10 utility trailer. With the amount of materials I brought in I've literally paid both of them off already from scrap profits.

lol would it be cost effective just driving around looking for stuff to pick up? a trailer on the back of your car would not amount to much especially a little 4x6 aluminum one.

Well where I work parking is tight so not sure if I have the luxury of driving around with a trailer. I never drive around looking for things to scrap; I just usually notice them as I am driving to work or driving around to yardsales. I know I probably need to break down and buy a truck but I am not a rich man :-) I guess I'll just wait for my car to die and the next vehicle will be a truck.

Sometimes I go to goodwill on $1 day and it kills me when I see a washing machine for $1. I know I could get more than $1 scrapping it.

Well depending on what kind of car you drive (I asked before) you may be able to use something like this.

You would have to have a hitch installed. U-Haul and many others can do this for you.

I built one for my dad and he uses it all the time. Don't let its size fool you, it will tote a load. Just remember to tie it down good.

The racks Redneck pointed out really do come in handy. I have one similar to the second link. Heavy thing to drag out of the shed when I need it, but I have hauled all sorts of stuff on it. I haven't used it for scrap, but I have had a lawn mower, weed wacker, chain saw, shovel, stone rake, tree lopper, pole saw, gas cans, and some other stuff on one all at once. I know my dad used to use it for the snowblower, but I don't remember how he got it up on... must have used ramps, the darn thing weighs like 300 pounds.

You could carry a pipe wrench and at least get the brass pressure relief valve off of it.

Hey everyone, this is my first post ... :) Very interested in scraping :) I'm liking the idea of bringing all my $50,000 to the bank to get 5 million pennies then melting them into ignots. Oh yeah, I was curious, what's the point of melting into the ignots ? Do you get more bang for the buck ?

Some copper saved is copper earned.. hehe :)
