I went into one of the many local Chase branches today to pick up my penny and nickel order. The teller who always waits on me finally asked me if I was a coin collector and I told her yes. She said I wasn't the only person picking up pennies. She showed me a coin business card for a guy who comes up and picks up pennies every week. It said he bought and sold coins. She said he only picks up pennies though.
I asked her if she ever looks for silver coins and she said she wouldn't know what to look for. So, she had some halves and I showed her how to tell if they were silver. I told her if anyone turns in halves to let me know. I was kind of surprised the coin seller guy doesn't order/pick up halves.

| when you say nickel's, do you just store them or do you search for war time nickels and return the rest? |

| lol, if you told her how to search for silver you probably won't be finding any silver at that branch. I know a couple tellers that are pretty good about searching the banks supply. It kindof sucks. |

Well to be honest, I don't really like going through bank wrapped halves. Ive done it before and have gotten skunked. I figured if someone turns in a bunch of halves I have a better chance and if I can befriend her I have a better chance of picking them up vs someone else.
I told her to tell me if someone turns in a bunch of halves that I would take them.
I kind of educated her because she wanted me to take a bunch of 1980's halves and thought they were silver ones. So I just showed her how to tell the difference. Maybe I was wrong but I figured if a coin dealer is going in there my chances of getting silver are going to be pretty low.
With regards to nickels, I take out the silver war nickels, buffalo, 1930's, 1940's non silver, and 1950's nickels and turn back in the rest. |

| I think it is okay if you tell and show tellers about silver coins. You'll know not to buy any halves for silver at their branch, but it definitely helps to have tellers on your side and interested in silver. That way, when you pick up pennies and other coins, the teller won't find it suspicious and won't hassle you. |

Dude, you gotta call that guy and see what he's selling. Ask what kind of coin bullion he has! |

| I would at least ask him and figure out what he is doing. If he is simply sorting wheats out than its not really competition...unless thats what you are after. |

| That was my point. Feign interest in all that he has, and hint around to see if copper bullion is on his sales list. If he has bags and bags of copper, it's off to find a new source bank!!! |

If she doesn't decide to keep the wild Ag for herself, better hope she doesn't share her new knowledge with anybody else (fellow tellers, the guy who left the business card)...
Most of the tellers in my network of banks are Ag hunters.

Sounds like a great source bank. I have a hard time getting orders out of Chase. They tell me their corporate office does the orders automatically and it is hard for them to put in special orders. They do give me a lot of CWR's though. This is where I got that one roll with 31 Buffalos and 5 War nickels in it from. |

I very recently discovered that I too may have some competition at my main bank which is a branch of a small independent bank in Central Florida. Competition for the wheats and maybe S mint marks.
A new teller that was curious what I was doing with so many rolls of pennies and I told her about the birth year coin projects and now the anniversary year coin project. She said that there is another person searching rolls but he is only wanting the wheats. Well, that means I won't be getting any more wheats from the rolls he has checked but I can deal with that.
What is puzzling me is his method of searching/sorting I can NOT figure out how or why he is doing what he is doing if he is truly only searching for wheat pennies. She showed me how he marks the rolls and I had gotten some a few months back and was intrigued by the marking system as I couldn't figure it out then. Now, knowing what he is supposedly searching for I still can't figure out his system. I keep very detailed notes now on what I find or observe about the rolls.
He is putting hash marks on the wrappers and there could be from 3 - 9 hash marks on each wrapper. I know there are not that many wheats in the area that would show up in every roll. To further compound the puzzle in my mind, I will go through roll after roll that he has already searched and there will be from 0 - 4 or so copper pennies. Then I will get a roll marked exactly the same way as his others and there may be 43 or more copper pennies in the one roll.
Really strange. Has anyone else on here ever encountered something similar or does anyone on here also mark their rolls in a similar way? If so, what could the various amount of hash marks mean?
Thanks.
Enjoy your coin roll searches, everyone. |

| perhaps PTP, this individual is reusing rolls. Since there are no wheats showing up in any of the rolls that are supposedly from this other sorter. At least the copper is being left for you to catch. |
