Hello everyone :o) My twelve year old son wants to save copper pennies. He saved enough (along with Mom's help) to buy a Ryedale coin machine. We should have it in about a week. We've been reading up on this site and learning quite a bit. He just wanted to collect and store the copper pennies. Due to the high cost of the machine, I thought I'd sort and sell some to recoup the cost of the machine. Here is my question... should we hand sort after they go through the machine and get out the wheats/Indian Heads and keep them seperate? Save enough maybe to sell those all together? I don't see either of us looking at each coin for certain dates/marks etc like many of you seem to do. Sorry for the long question. Any advice is appreciated!

welcome to the forum and good job on the ryedale purchase. Since you will be a smaller operation I would say to hand sort out them and save them. Also I find it funny where you said the Indian(S). Just messing with you and keep up the good work and raising what seems to be a smart child! Derek |

WELCOME!!!
Sorting out the wheats and IH's is your choice. The Wheats will get about 4 cent each in bulk. You say now that you won't look at the dates, but I imagine that you will. If you find a 1909 S-VDB you will be glad you were looking. The machine does seem high at 1st. But after you have had it for a short time, you will realize that it is priced well for what it does. The Ryedale also has a high resale value.
I wish I would have had the foresight at 12 that your son has.

Hello and welcome! I don't have a Ryedale, but if I did I think I'd do what you said and quickly sort through afterwords to get the wheats. It would be pretty easy, you'd just have to turn them all on their back to quickly to spot the difference.
So far I've just doing them by hand a few rolls here & there and I have a lot of fun doing that. I think Ryedale might be best if you are just looking to build up a mass quantity quickly. If only they could come up with a Wheatie sorter! |

I agree with misteroman. Hand sort and have fun! Be sure to pull out any Indian Heads and Wheat Pennies like you said, as those are worth more than regular copper pennies. Also save the 1943 steel pennies, as they have collector value as well. You and your son are beginning a wonderful thing; a fun and rewarding hobby. Best of luck to you two! Happy Hoarding! Kirkland :-) |

I do a quick sort through the zinc rejects after putting them through the Ryedale because that's where the Indians and pre-war Wheats hide. I have an old shelf about 4 feet long and 1 foot wide, with narrow wood sides glued on to keep the pennies in. Put a strong worklight over it and push the rejects along under the light. I don't flip them over, because after a while you get a sixth sense whether it is an old coin or not. You won't find many here, maybe one or two per box.
To sort the keepers, I have two masonite boards about two feet long and one foot wide with old yardsticks glued to the edges, like a frame with one side open. One board nests over the other so the coins cannot turn over. Scatter a handful and pick out Wheats and Canadians. Then put the nesting board on top... *FLIP* and do the same for the other side, then slide the pennies into your storage container.
The Ryedale is a great machine, but it has some jamming quirks which are easily dealt with. BTW - Andy is great with customer service. |

| Welcome, and as others have said just keep setting aside the wheats until you get enough to make it worth while to sell, which would be several hundred. So that will take you awhile. And yes you will look at the dates when you find them because you don't find that many at any one time. Maybe you will be lucky and find a key date. I think it is great that you are getting your son interested in coin collecting I wish my Mom or Dad had done that with me when I was that age. I actually sort through my pennies before I run them through the Ryedale. That way I can pick out the wheats and Indians and I also pick out any bent coins or ones with glue on them or any doubles I find. That just about eliminates any jams. I can usually run 50,000 pennies through in one sitting with out a single jam. |

Thank you all so much for your responses :o) I guess we will be saving all the wheats we find. After reading your comments, my son has now decided he will learn what dates to look for and check them. He has almost a dozen 5 gallon buckets of pennies that were left to him by his grandmother so I think he will be busy for awhile!
Andy at Ryedale is wonderful.. he took a lot of time talking to me and answering my questions.
I have 3 children and this is my quiet, middle child. He watches the Learning Channel and Discovery channel which is where he learns so much I guess. Hopefully all his copper pennies will make him rich someday and his mom can retire early..lol... I know he'll take care of me because when he was 6 and he got $50 for his birthday, he said he was saving half in the bank so when I got old he could buy me one of those old person cars to get around.... turns out he was talking about those electric scooters for seniors!
Thanks again and I'll update when we get going. |

| That's great about the pails of pennies. If they were pulled from circulation many years ago which I imagine they were they should have a high percentage of copper and wheats in them. |

I think it's great that you and your son are doing this together. Some of my fondest memories are from when my dad got me started at 6 and we sorted the pennies from his Alhambra bottle together. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |
