Hi Guys! This is my first time posting here. I don't know what took me so long, but not until last week did I realize the thing about pre 83 pennies. Its like free money!! I can only imagine others will soon be catching on, especially as copper prices rise.
So I just bought my first box, along with a box worth of loose rolls. The box was fantastic, usually between 30-40% for each roll. The loose rolls have been a little less but I'm not done with them. I've found at least 25 wheats so far too.
The downside is, it takes forever! I think it took me about an hour to sort 1200 pennies. I'd eventually like to invest in a penny sorter, but I've only seen 2 kinds of those so far - the Ryedale, and the Penny Miser.
But before I get that far, I think I'd like to first invest in a decent coin counting & wrapping machine. This one doesn't look bad. You must be logged in to see this link.
Does anybody out there have any experience or recommendations to share?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I'm new to this too.
From what I have heard I would go with Ryedale. The Penny Miser is a new machine and all the bugs aren't worked out yet. Ryedale is already established and has many users.
I recently purchased a Ryedale Ace and I can't wait to use it. |

Welcome pennywise.
The Ryedale is the sorter of choice for the big dogs (and little dogs) It is well made, comes with GREAT customer service and there are many that have logged over 3 million coins and still going strong. It is well worth the money and has a high resale value.
As far as a coin sorter goes, the Royal Sovereign will probably not be recommended. I myself have never owned one. When sorting pennies, especially on a big scale like most of us do, you want a commercial machine. There are the DeLaRue MACH series that are fast and reliable and built tough as nails. They can be pricey, but you get a good quality machine. There is also CS-10's and CS-95's. They are counters with off sort. You sort the largest coins out first, while the others are off sorted. You work your way down till the dime is off sorted and the penny is counted.
A coin counter is one of the machines that you pretty much need. IF you are selling, this will allow you to count out the amount you need. It is also needed if you can return your zincs loose in bank bags.
If you have a bank with a free coin counting machine in the lobby, that will be the best way to dump the zincs. Coin wrappers can be expensive.
Keep reading old posts and asking questions. We are happy to steer you in a direction...hopefully it will be the right direction. |

Pennywise...welcome.
I don't own any sorting machines, but I believe that Ryedale offers more than one machine and these are at various price points.
I have seen the newest one, which would be like an entry level machine, in operation. Really neat to see it work. I think it is called Ace.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.

| Thanks for the replies! A Ryedale is definitely on the wish list. I was hoping for more of a lower cost counter/roller, but I'll have to keep my eyes open for a good deal, maybe find a good used one on ebay. |

| Good news on the ACE too! I just looked up the thread on that. I'll probably be able to afford that one. Thanks! |

pennywise.. The Ryedale is definately the way to go.
I have owned a Royal Sovereign.. it certainly has its limitations.. but you could make it work. Just use a digital scale to verify roll weights after you roll them. Also, you could save a lot by not buying the cartridge tubes.. just have it count into the plastic tube and then roll them in your used wrappers or the free ones you get from the bank. You can also save money if you buy the 3 row RS rather than the 4 row model.
If you want a really good rolling machine I recommend the Glory WS-21. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

Thanks for the tips guys. About the Glory WS-21. Err, maybe when our local banks start going belly up I can snag one for a few bucks!
Is there any way to subscribe to these threads? I find it a little hard to come back and look for any responses I might have missed. But I don't think this is one of those fancy PHP forums is it? |
