I found a 2007 (New Jefferson Face)Nickel with a hollowed out back. The face is the same size and looks real, but the back is hollowed out and looks like glue on the inside of hollowed out coin.

It must of taken a lot of time to design this. Still wondering what purpose this backless nickel has?

Could possibly be a magician's coin. Any pictures?

Magicians coin. Will fit a dime or penny usually in the cutout. Being the son of a prominent lifelong magician, I have many examples of these. I have a lot of two sided coins as well and things like standing liberty halves with a English penny face on the backside. Also folding coins of all types. The machining can be OK to unbelievable such is the skill of many makers. I have a quarter with a hidden spring loaded hole that will fit a pencil or cigarette. The best are almost invisible up close but the average coin will be invisible at a few feet.So many variations and many will never be found in catalogs or the internet. Many were one of a kind. I think I have examples from the 50's and 60's.

These days I have found almost 10 examples of hollowed coins found in the rejects of popular coin counting machines in the last 16 months.

Side Note: Being a silver fiend, I have noted one of my fathers final keepsakes is a set of heavy sterling silver cups (3, for the cup and ball routine) they were custom machined long ago and are very valuable. Gonna lucky magician that gets these.

You'd be amazed, I know that I was, at what is done to coins to try to alter them for various purposes.

I was talking with a gentlemen at a booth on Sunday at the
FUN Show and he was showing us these special microscope cameras that have a multitude of uses. One use is to determine if a coin has been altered in any way at all. People will drill in through the edge of a coin and alter the surface from inside the coin and then patch up their small hole and age the patching material to where it is not detectable at all to the naked eye or even to slight magnification. I was floored. I had no idea people would try to do things like that.

I found the other side of this coin when I sorted another bag of nickels about a week after finding the hollowed out side. The other side was about half the width of a dime and also had the same face as the other side. It was a double headed coin with glue holding them together. I guess the glue gave way and resulted in two pieces.
Pretty surprised to find the other half.

Go out now and buy a lotto ticket. Right now.
