I am looking to buy a book on the Lincoln Cent, and it seems there are two out there, "Guide Book of Lincoln Cents" by Q. David Bowers and "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents" by David W. Lange. Does anyone own these books, to where they could contrast the contents? I don't care about die varieties; I mostly want the history.
I have seen Bowers' in the bookstore and I liked the run-through year by year...but the information seemed a little skimpy and too much "life and times" with un-numismatic information. But Bowers' book is 2007 vs. 1995 for Lange. Is there a 2nd edition in the works?
Thanks in advance!

| You might check amazon. They sometimes have a "look inside" option. Notwithstanding that, Seems to me Bowers has been around a while, in a blind I'd trust him. |

I agree with fb101. Q. D. Bowers has been one of the premiere numismatic experts for many years. He's not only a leading coin dealer, but has written extensively on many areas of numismatics. If there are only these two authors, I'd go with Q.D.B.

I could probably loan you Lange book for a few months. I think he writes a more informative book nowadays. Bowers writes some great books too.. but I think he has become somewhat of a book churner. |

Here is a link to one I have been thinking about buying. You may want to check it out also. Since I have not read it I can not make any recommendation.

Thanks everyone for your input.
This article by Lange on the NGC website sold me on Lange's book. It's about San Francisco cents 1968-1974. You must be logged in to see this link.

One of the best sources, IMO, is your local public library. Visit a branch and use it as a precursor. I have found that if the title you are interested in isn't available they will find it for you. After checking it out for free from cover to cover, you may decide which suits your needs. I have saved quite a bit of time and money (Cent investing money) and know where to find it if I wish to revisit any titles. Happy reading, and enjoy sorting and collecting. |

Great article by Lange. He is really a great guy and does excellent research. I knew him before he went to work for NGC years ago. He is a true collector and was a member of several of the coin clubs I belong to. I still see him from time to time at some of the bigger coin shows. Dave is a regular guy who just loves researching coins. |

| I have both and the only thing I don't like about Lange's book is that it's 8.5" x 11"- hard to casually hold and read. |
