Save them?
Pass them on?

I started saving pennies about two years ago. I trade them out of the cash register at work.

Do you guys pass on slightly corroded pennies? If I keep them in the same jar as other, non-corroded pennies with those also corrode? Thanks for the help.

Welcome!

I've received advice from long time coin collectors and they tell me that, yes, corrosion/green stuff, etc. is contagious to other coins stored in with the contaminated one(s).

Enjoy your searches, everyone.

AGREED, copper is copper even if green. However I do seperate the really nasty coins for later cleaning or send back.

I did open a roll that had a large green spot on one coin and a smaller spot on the coin it was touching in the roll..so i am of the thought that yes it is contagious but am not worried too much about it.

Yeah, I am running into this same problem, not big though, just annoying as it jams my ryedale! Also, the lady at one of my dump
banks called them MUTES, what is this bank LINGO? I don't know, but I agree copper is copper, its just dirty copper, if you can clean a battery post full of corrosion, you can clean a few dozen pennies sometime in the next year or two...up here in ND, we
worry more about the battery posts or we don't get to work!!!!

As mentioned above. I have used spray battery post cleaner to clean corroded copper coins. You can spray it on Q tips if you like. You may find though that the majority of severely corroded pennies are zinc.

I wouldn't really worry about a couple ugly coins. But you could also try and wash them in baking soda and water. Or vinegar and salt. Both would take some time to work the really dirty pennies clean, but it's worth it if the end product yields a cleaner coin.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.
