Does anyone here pan for gold, and if so, how has your luck been?

I pan for gold, but that is just to locate the yellow stuff. You would be hard pressed to earn a days wages consistently using just a pan. Once you locate productive material, then you use a sluce box, high-banker, or a suction dredge to move lots of material. You still need to get good at working a pan because even with machinery that moves the earth by the ton, you'll still have to pan the concentrates. My luck has been good, but that is because I am working proven ground. Living in alaska has it's advantages...

I pan but only find black sand on the North Olympic Peninsula.
I tried the potato with Hg trick and have about a 1/2 oz. yellow "button" of unknown fineness.

Sooner or later I'm going to try the toe of a melting AK glacier!

I've promised the first sizable hit to my wife in the form of a WIDE band for the third finger finger of her left hand.
If I'm lucky enough to find 2 nice nuggets, they have been promised as earrings.

You'll never find color if you don't look!!!
Don't forget to examine the shiny "glassy" looking stones (especially if you're in MT).

There's profit if you melt things!!

I would love to do it, but it isn't my wife's idea of fun. Also, the nearest place to do it is 4 hours away and not really convenient.

My dad lived in Vegas for a while. He had a rock that is flecked with gold that he found in the desert. I tried to get him to tell me where he got it when I was out visiting, but he couldn't remember.

I have done a little panning and high banking in western NC. I would really like to try dredging one day. I use to be a member of the GPAA but soon lost interest. The nearest location is five to six hours away and I really would like to find a place where I can go and spend about a week and find the yellow stuff without it costing a fortune. I want to be able to relax some, have fun but work a little and come home with more than a few flakes in a water filled vial.

All the time. There are quite a few very local places to pan in my area. (Prescott AZ)

But like garnede said it's hard work for a day's wages. Backbreaking work and our local areas don't allow dredging. Hand tools only. But there's lot's of gold in them thar hills.
All areas that allow dredging are claimed, claim jumping is a good way to get killed.

If you can find the owner of a claim, they will often let you work their claim for 10% of your find. Copper Catcher you should be close to decent cold in western north carolina. As well as quarts, emerald, sapphire, adventuine, aquamarine, garnet, topaz, tourmaline, rose quartz, smoky quartz, rutilated quartz, rutile, moonstone, and several others. Dig a hole in a mineralized area and use a 1/2 inch classifier to find large stones, then use a small screen to wash away the clay and find the small stones.

I tried the same thing. Man that potato tasted like crap!

And, my kid started acting really weird after dinner.

I haven't been out in a while, but I do prospect a little. Just started to get into it, really. I am heading to the East Fork here in the next couple weeks. Southern CA has it's advantages. I would love to get a detector and head out to the desert.

I had my gold refined and minted into this coin, like it better than the dust it was. Would have been able to had more coins made if hadn't partied so hard. HH Mark
