I have been hoarding only pre-1981 .999 pure nickels, and was under the impression that all later coins were nickel plated steel. Turns out, I was wrong - those minted between 1981 and 2000 are the same composition as US nickels (25/75 cupronickel) and so are also worth more at melt than face, although they have the same added cost of melting as US nickels. Anyway, that knowledge is sure to increase the percentage of nickels in a box worth haording - I just wish I'd known earlier, so that I'd have 2 boxes of cupronickel next to my two boxes of pure nickel
