So last Saturday I went into the bank to get a bag of pennies. The head teller brings out a bag of pennies and an empty bag. I ask him why the empty bag, and he says the coding on the first bag can't be handed out.
OK so he opens the old bag and we start pouring the pennies into the new bag, and the smell is so bad it's gagging us. So after asking around we find out someone had run these pennies into the counter and along with that a dead mouse fell into the counter. Must have been in with the pennies for quite a while.
So I took the bag home and I put it away, then I went to open it and put it away, then I went to open it and put it away. Then I gave up. I just couldn't face that smell again. So I took the whole thing to my TD bank and dumped it into the coin counter there. Counted $49.97 and two more pennies in the reject tray which I left there.
I just know there was an 09s-vdb in that bag.....

Cu ain't always pretty; Rotten mouse, Schmotten mouse, there was Cu in that bag, Dude! Sack up and sort... They make anti-bacterial hand wash for after! There probably were 6 '09 VDB S's, 3/4th's of a Tribe and several $2.50 gold hunks waiting for liberation. ;)
Is it too late to retreive it? |

I thought you were tougher than that.
I don't feel so bad about not getting bags now. Never found Mickey in a box. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Or... how many bags would you have to sort and sell in order to pay for the doctor's visit and prescriptions resulting for the weird disease you got? |

You only get weird diseases from inhaling mouse/rat poop(no seriously, some virus in their dried poop can get into the air if left to dry and join with the dust in your house).
I don't know, I've been there once before when the pennies were so blue and green and corroded that by the end of it I too had wished that I had just brought the pennies to the bank. TO make it worse, when I did bring them to the bank they refused to pour them into their machine becuase of all the corrosion dust all over them. I actually had to take them home, wash them and dry them in order to dump them!!!! |

Alas, you mouse bag is now history...gone to the far away land of the lost. The 1909 S VDB, the 1922 plain, the 1931 S and even the five 1955 double die will not been seen.
All Realcent flags must be lowered to half mast, lights turned low and wait for the new dawn and the howl of the lone wolf. |

| Now that 1909 S VDB is going to be given to some kid in change who is going to take it to the rail road tracks and watch a train smash it. |

I feel your pain, fb101. It's hard to do, but I think you made the wisest decision. Just don't think about what might have been in the bag.
On a smaller scale and with no smell, I too had to pass on a roll of pennies the other day. They weren't gunked up or nasty as they normally are, they were just too corroded to be able to do anything with them. I sat and thought about the possibilities I might be missing out on but the coins were so chewed up on the edges that I just couldn't sort them~~I couldn't stand how they felt in my hands. It would be my luck to find a valuable error/variety and have it worth zilch due to the coin condition. So I put them back in their roll and marked in my note book--TOO Corroded to Sort!
That was a first for me.
Hope no other bags were contaminated with that horrid smell.
I didn't know mice liked pennies!!! Wonder where the person had the pennies stored that a mouse would get in with them and then die. You'd think they would have noticed the smell and would have done something before dumping the entire lot in the counter--including the dead mouse. Ick!!!

So did it count him as a quarter or dollar? Or did he come out the reject chute? |

Cu has excellent anti-bacterial properties, almost on par with Ag. So the risk of getting sick should have been low.
Just the same, that bag never would have came home with me. It would not find its way into my car, and definitely would never had come into my house.
Life is too short to deal with extreme skank like that.., unless I could look into the bag and see a fist full of IH's. Then I would have to figure something out...

This is by far the grossest post i've read on this forum. I think the second i heard the teller explain why it smelled that bad, i would be happy to let the bag stay with the bank.
I would feel a little guilty for not taking it, but that's a rotten deal. I hope you didn't run the coins through any machines at you place, and that you washed you hands and anything that bag may have touched a couple times over.
fun stuff. |

Earlier this year I got a bag of wet pennies. I assumed that someone had washed them before dumping. Now I am hoping that it was just water.
There is no doubt that this can be a nasty hobby, but I think you get the prize for the year. |

Eric, I hope you aren't going to tell us you threw in a hundred dollar bill afterwards, since it wasn't worth going retrieving it otherwise, because your wallet was empty? Except for ID? |

You should have put them in a bucket with some water and bleach and let them soak overnight. Then in the morning, you could have poured off the excess water and loaded them into the clothes dryer for a quick little tumble dry...
Just don't let the wife find out...

| Let me see, tellers/mgt at a bank, and one of us is always bothering them about penny pickups (total hassle for them), this would be a really great way to "nicely" try to prod us to look elsewhere. This is just really unusual. If I was the bank manager, NO WAY would I have allowed any teller to offer this to any of my "Customers". What would that way about MY BANK. Just NO WAY I would have allowed it. |

Mouse in a bag? I've touched worse. I would have had to figure out something. I've only returned one bag without sorting. The bag was full of sand and the pennies were coated with something that made the sand stick to them. It looked like they were dug from a very fine sanded beach. Kinda smelled like it too. Nearesh white sand beach is over 1000 miles away I think.
I was out on that bag. It upset the dump bank a little when I returned it. Oh well....

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |
