Came across this strange penny during sorting tonight. Thought I'd post it here to see what you guys think of it. It's sort of hard to explain and the pics are not the best, but here it is.

The obverse as well as reverse has a faint image of the memorial on it, and rotated. On the front it doesn't look like its been stamped on, but kind of laminated on it or something. It has another thin layer of copper fixed to it and a portion has worn off.
The reverse has the same effect to a lesser degree, and the duplicate memorial appears with better clarity.
What say you guys? Got any idea what happened to this penny?

A guess: That cent has some kind of coating that picked up the memorial images from adjacent cents while in the roll. It looks like some kind of varnish. |

Looks like glue to me too.
I have found a few pennies glued together. I have to use a razor blade to get them apart. |

Yeah, you guys are right - its some kind of glue or something. If you look at it closely, the lettering that is evident in the glue residue is reversed. |

A razor blade sounds dsangerous to me for 2 cents....I just use a pair of pliers and squeeze the edges from the side, they usually pop right apart.
Sorry it wasn't a rare error Giddyup! |

Easy way to find out if it's glue. Since it is not a valuable coin, dip it in either Acetone, Laquer Thinner and/or even fingernail polish remover. These substances normally do not harm a coin itself but fingernail polish remover usually contains substances that eventually will create some toning on a coin. If that stuff comes off, it was some type of glue. If not, probably someone pressing two of them together in a vise. |

You could probably take that stuff off with a good bench grinder. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

No need for sharp blades, solvents or bottles of gas. Just put it on an electric stove burner (medium-low to medium centing) and wait until it stops smoking. You'll get achieve a beautiful rainbow toning with this technique. |

Speaking of...
I asked a few dealers at the recent FUN Show and not one of them could give me an answer. Perhaps someone on here can.
Rainbow toning is, to quite a few collectors, highly desirable on the silver dollars and sometimes on other silver coinage.
Why, then, is it not also desirable on pennies???
I have found a few pennies that had gorgeous rainbow toning on them and asked around but everyone said it wasn't something that people desired.
Why the difference???
Thanks. |

Some type of adhesive residue that was cemented to the penny. Pretty disgusting, and should be treated like a normal copper penny. |
