I wish I had a camera, it would make this a lot easier. I found an interesting "coin" today, which I'm guessing is some kind of tracking device, not sure. It is the same composition as the penny, same dimensions, 2.5grams. No date. One side says Uncirculated around top of the rim with Denver on the bottom. Capital D in middle. Other side says United States Mint on top Tresury on bottom with a shield bearing balances a chevron with thirteen stars and a key. Is this a souvenir, maybe, that they hand out during tours? Anyone come across one of these before?

It is the token from the Denver mint included in the mint set. |

| Someone likely opened the mint set to add the coins to their collection and managed to put the token into circulation. It is not legal tender (no legal value) but will make a nice addition to your odd finds in circulation collection. |

What years were they included? Copper years, zinc years only? I would guess they could be bullion, but they're worth more than that.
EDIT: answered my own question. Looks like they were included in mint sets from 1984-1999 only. So it's assumed they are zinc planchets. There were some rather large tokens included in the 1982-1983 mint sets... anyone know more about those?
EDIT AGAIN: The Mints didn't make mint sets in 1982-1983. They made "souvenir sets." I have one of these big ol' tokens; does anyone know what it's made of? |

| The one found is made on a zinc penny blank according to the description. Normally they would stay in the mint set, so it would be hard to collect up enough to create zinc bullion. |

Two questions: 1. Has anyone else besides beauanderos found one of these cent-sized tokens in their searches? 2. Does anyone have the big bronze medal from the Philadelphia mint to go with my Denver one? I did some eBay research and found out that souvenir sets from 1980 through 1987 had them included. This is the size of an Ike and weighs 25.9 grams. Assuming it's the same bronze as the copper planchets, doesn't that mean it's got about 17c worth of copper in it? I guess that's three questions. Anyway... |

| Figured maybe some hand-sorters would have, but Ryedales would spit these out right along with the other zincs, right? So do you recall, was it from hand-searching, or from scanning the zinc bucket? |

It was from machine sorting. I do a quick sift of my zinc pile and pluck the Indians, Old Wheats, Canadian and other forum before dumping it in one of the high speed counters or automatic rolling machines for disposal. |

I got a whole bunch of these once outside of a coin show(small town coin show).
A dealer was loading up to leave and about 25 of these fell off of his cart on his way out, I asked him if he realized it and he said yeah, "take em if you want em, I was just going to leave em there" It was a neat score! They were all still sealed in their corner of mint plastic. |

| I found mine by scanning my zinc discards just before counting and bagging them. Found a 1912 yesterday, the same way, so even though it's a little more time consuming I get enough occasional rewards to keep doing it. I stopped doing double Rye's and just do one copper keep now. I'll hand check my boxes of keepers someday when I can't get boxes to sort. |
