After finding those five fantastic nickels yesterday, I was so thrilled. But, my excitement was tempered by the fact that I knew I would offer to return those five nickels to where I got them. That's just the way I was raised.
This morning after my husband was up for work, he agreed to drive me in to the next town, since he didn't have to go to work until later this afternoon, so I could talk with the guy that I had gotten the bag of nickels from. I couldn't, with a clear conscience, keep these coins without letting him know they had been in the bag.
So, I walked into the coin shop where I had gotten the bag of loose nickels at just less than face value (5 cents less than total face value) on Friday to show him what I had found in the bag and offer to return them to him. He has let me buy bags of pennies in the past for face value and I always tell him that if I find anything good I'll let him know and let him decide what to do with the coin and we'll split any money made. I've never found anything good though. But on Friday after getting a bag of 285 pennies from him, he asked me if I ever search nickels. I said yes and he said I have a small bag here if you'd like them to search. He counted them out on his machine and there was $11.05 worth. I said OK, but here is the nickel change from my pennies to go along with the $11.00. He said no. Then I said, please take out one nickel to make it $11.00 even. He said, no these are yours to go through for $11.00 and if you find anything good, let me know. Those are always his parting words.
So, today when I went in with my little baggie of 5 nickels he asked what I had. I then asked him if he had meant to give me that particular bag of nickels. Yes, he said. Are you sure, I ask, because there were some really good nickels in the bag???
He jokingly said, "What, did you find a 1950 D?" Yes, I tell him, plus others. He asked what else I found. I told him the other four key dates. He truly seemed surprised about those coins being in that bag of nickels.
He looked at the 1950 D and declared that it would be considered an Unc. coin, even though I had conservatively thought it was an AU 58.
He swears he had no idea those coins were in that bag, and yes, they were mine to keep at the face value I paid for them. I again told him I didn't feel right about it and there was no way I could have kept them without letting him know they were in the bag. He told me that he knows that I will be honest with him if I ever find anything good. Left unsaid was the sentiment "that's why I let you have bags of coins to search at face value".
I've also told him many times, that there are probably errors I can't see and am missing them and, thus returning them to the wild to hopefully be found by others, but he said that's OK.
Even though these weren't found in rolls obtained from a bank, I still feel I found them searching coins. Maybe they were a gift from him, but he truly looked surprised, shocked even, that they were in the bag of nickels he had sold to me for searching.
And, Now You Know the Rest of the Story!
I definitely had my Christmas a few days early.
I hope each and every one of you will be Blessed in some special way this Christmas season.

Yes, it is "Mrs. PTP"--thanks Nickelmeister. But no worries, Junk Woody. Merry Christmas to you, too, and to all members on this great forum. |

No problem at all, Junk Woody. Just makes me feel like one of the guys.
Actually, I've told others on here that it makes me feel like a rose amongst the thorns--no offense to all the wonderful gentlemen on this site. But sometimes, a woman's point of view makes everything....... Well, I'll let each and every one of you finish that thought...IN Your Own Minds, Please!!!
Junk Woody...I appreciate your kind words on my finds.
Enjoy your searches, everyone. |

| awesome indeed. It is nice having a good and trusting relationship with a coin dealer. I've met a few shady ones that I just didn't like dealing with!!! |

PTP -
That's one heck of an addition to your nickel collection for a mere 5 cents!!! Congrats!!!
In my 38 years, I have never found the '50-D. There is no doubt in my mind that finding the '50-D nickel is WAY tougher than an IHP in the U.S. or a George V cent in Canada. Way to go!!!
Cheers,
Jeff |
