I read a few post where people are saving their copper S-mints. Is there a market for these compared to the other coppers. I hand sort and see a few here and there.

| They (are) worth a little more than P and D mint. But it may take awhile to score big those coins. |

The S-mint coins tend to have a lower mintage year after year than their Denver and Philadelphia counterparts. That's why 8 of the best coins in the wheat set are the 1909-1915 S-mint coins. That's why the 1931-S is quite valuable - because its mintage is so low.
But not everyone realizes that the 1968-S has the lowest mintage of any memorial cent (besides proofs). It's by no means rare (258 million), but comparatively, it's the "rarest" memorial.
I separate out all S-mint coins and save them. In the memorial set, they were made from 1968-1974, just SEVEN years. It's a neat little subset to save. |

I think the S mint copper memorials would sell at a premium.. but it would be too much work for me to sort them out since all my copper sorting is done by machine. In the early days of copper penny selling on eBay a guy actually gave me a Negative because he thought there weren't enough S mint cents in his bag. I surveyed a few bags of copper I had sorted.. and out of 5,000 coppers the S mint percentages were running only 5-7% even here 40 miles from the SF mint. I think the percentages are even lower elsewhere in the country. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| As already noted the S mints on many coins are usually more valuable. In the Lincoln Cent series, in even the poorest grades some are worth a real lot. 09S VDB = $750, 10S = $16, 11S = $45, 12S = $22 and many more. |

I remember you mentioning that Hoard. What was he wanting? the sets already put together for him?
I hadn't noted that the 1968-S had the lowest mintage of the memorials, that is probably why I rarely see one.
I save those that look decent. But if they have harsh wear or damage or corrosion, then I toss them too. (toss them into the "Smealter Bread" box.) |

Great answer misteroman! Alas, I didn't have the copper rod back then. I just blocked him.. added a response to my feedback explaining mintage percentages and moved on. You just can't please everybody. Funny thing is.. half the bag was BU rolls of copper cents. He tells me the copper cents I sent him he could just go get at the bank. I don't know too many folks getting orginal rolls at the bank. Heck, I would like to have those shiny ones back.

In a year I cannot put together 10 rolls of S cents from circulation. |

My S-mint count is even less than that! barely 5 rolls combined of all years over the past 14 months of sorting, and they are not the greatest condition coins. I average around 2 per box here in the northeast. I don't mind though, because the CU percentages are off the charts around here. |

I'd say your 'off the charts' CU percentages is the far better situation!!
I have such low percentages down here in south texas. I miss living in Indiana. up Percentages were great. Always above 20%, up to 35%. (minus the skunk all new pennies boxes) |

Yeah, especially since there is no premium for rolls of circulated S-mint mems... just the satisfaction of knowing that you found something which is comparatively rare.
But "comparatively rare" doesn't mean much, does it?! Take this for instance. Lotsa people know the mintage of the 09-S VDB cent is 484,000. And you can expect to pay about a grand to get one right? Most Vatican City coins have mintages lower than that, yet you can pick them up for a few bucks each. And the coins are absolutely stunning. I know it's off topic but I gotta show you some... okay - this one's copper. So we're good. Haha. A little bigger than a nickel. Not a lot of wear. And I paid two bucks.

Oh yeah, I forgot to finish making my point. This coin has a mintage of only 90,000. Five times rarer than the 09-S VDB. |

I agree! I wouldn't trade more S-mints for lower percentages. I'm spoiled with the percentages around here, my lowest ever box was 25.3% and that was more than 8 months ago, the 5 boxes I sorted over the past 2 weeks were: 27.7%, 28.9%, 46.8%, 29.8%, 34.9%. I'm averaging 30.1% over the last 30 boxes. |
