I was sorting customer rolls and I found a "5 pfennig Bundesrepublik, Deutschland 1950F" coin. From the former West Germany I assume? I was wondering if anyone else ever received one, or if anyone knows for sure what it is. Thanks.
Deal
I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

I found a 1977 5 pfenning like you described. I'm not too sure of it's origin or history or what have you but i hope someone does have some insight which they can share with us. Other interesting finds have been common wealth of the bahamas penny, bermuda penny, D G REG F D (whatever that is) "new penny" (again, whatever that is), munt van curacao penny (that's another mystery one to me), and one coin that looks like a hand cut ancient coin. I've also found a couple canadian centenial pennies and a king georg IV canadian penny. Oh yeah, there's also a few blanks and a plastic "coin money" lincoln penny. I'm always finding interesting coins. |

I was just sorting through a jar of coins from different countries and found several german pfennigs. They were legal tender up until the Euro a fews years back. The last time I was there the family looked sadly at the old coins and told me it was past time to use either. I have 1, 2, 5, and 10 Pfennigs and one full German Mark. They are fun to look at but I think thats about it. jldco |

That the second year of post-war West German currency. I think the F mint mark refers to Stuttgart. It's not noteworthy unless it is in top condition according to the Krause book. Listed as having a brass-plated steel composition. |

I don't think that I've seen a pfenning yet, but I have seen lots of strange stuff including:
1. gold plated and silver plated pennies 2. a magicians penny dated 1942 (Its a hollowed out penny that a dime can fit in. So you can magically change the penny to a dime by flipping it over.) 3. plastic play money 4. modern gray pennies that have been chemically treated to have all the copper plating removed (probably kids playing with acid?) 5. a 2 cent Euro coin that is worth like 3 US cents with the exchange rate 6. coins from maybe 10 different foreign countries |

Wova identified your coin excatly, NotABigDeal. It's brass-plated steel, and no longer legal tender even in Germany. I've got a German 5 pfennig coin very similar to yours, but mine's from 1949. Dad found it in a penny roll decades ago, and gave it to me. It was the start of my foreign coin collection.
These days I find more foreign coins than older US ones. Just in the last year my foreign coin collection has more than doubled, and now includes coins from 40 nations. I find them in rolls and boxes, in reject trays or coin-sorting robots, and from tellers who were just going to throw them out anyway. I think this stuff is very cool, and someday my descendants will marvel at 'grandpa's collection of 20th century world coins', from as far away as New Zealand, Eritrea, Portugal, Chile, and Iraq.
I've gotten experienced at identifying foreign coins, and I'll gladly render my services in "What the heck is this" duty. I'll start a thread in the Nurismatics subforum for this.
RUNNING TOTAL --------------------------------------- 3331 zincs (1982-2007) 75.5% 1053 coppers (1959-1982) 23.9% 26 wheats (1920-1958) 6 Canadian (1968-1995) 1 dime (2004)
