I've been lurking a while, but since I joined to ask MaDeuce about dealing with Brinks, I thought I would share my story as well.

I'm 43 years old and have saved every penny in change I have received since I was 12. I've got about ten 2 quart containers of pennys.

I have recently started sorting out the zinc pennies to replace them with coppers and am glad to report my personal penny horde runs about 70% coppers. I think the reason for this high number is that I have used a credit card for most purchases for the past ten years (in order to get the miles!) so most of the pennies I have are from the mid-nineties or earlier. Lots of pre-1982 in other words.

I recently decided to acquire some nickels and have already purchased two quarts worth (which is either $100.00 or $120.00 dollars worth. I'm saving anything pre-1964 (the year I was born) and any other nickel in decent shape. Damaged, scratched and well worn jeffersons go back to the bank for "new" ones. I am really only acquiring nickels as "emergency money" in case paper currency becomes worthless so I don't think I will acquire more than another hundred bucks or two.

I used to sort halves years ago and just ordered a $500.00 box. I would be very interested in using Brinks for delivery and pick up and would love some information on doing that.

I think it would be great to get a pallet of 20,000 halves to sort through for the silver coins.

I am a big gold bug and did really well with the ETFs GLD and SLV, but I am looking to really increase my physical holdings. Economic calamity and all.

A question about hording; is anybody else hoarding for nusimatic interests as well as the copper content? I believe that when we change to a steel penny the copper ones will all get melted down, leaving any pre-1982 lincoln cent worth even more than its copper content. What does everybody think of that?

Also, does anybody remember (like I do) in the 1970s when pennies were scarce how Mcdonald's offered to buy penny rolls for .75 cents and through in a free coke as well?

Welcome to the forum CommandD. Interesting how we all use different units of measurement to measure our hoards. You hoard by the quart, some guys hoard by the gallon, some guys hoard by the pound and a few of us hoard by the ton.

I hoard for numismatic interests as well. About 80% of my copper hoard, 100% of my zinc hoard and 100% of my US nickel hoard are BU rolls. I figure that gives me the double play for collector value as well as metalic value.

I am old enough to remember the good old days when establishments "wanted" pennies and were willing to pay a premium for them. Would love to see another penny shortage to create that situation. Maybe there will be a temporary shortage when they decide to try to convert to a cheaper material. Grocery stores in my area where paying $1.00 a roll! I think I could scare up a few rolls of zinc to sell them at that price. <G>

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.
