Hello all,

I would greatly appreciate some guidance on what I should do with my Sacagaweas. My mother works at a credit union. She called me about 7-8 years ago when they were cleaning out their vault, going to a coinless set-up. She had two sealed mint boxes of 2000-P Sacagawea dollars. I bought them for FV, $2000. I have been holding them unopened since. These are untouched, uncirculated, original mint-wrapped rolls, not fed-wrapped. Do you guys/gals believe there is any collector value here? I always figured I would hold them for 25-30 years, but now I am seriously wondering if I will just be left with $2000 FV minus about 95% of the value by way of runaway inflation. These rolls go on Ebay for anything ranging from $23-$35 depending on the nuance of the auction, but I do not feel there is any reliable way to capture the $35, and then there is of course the fees. Sell or hold? Open the boxes, or keep them sealed? Thank you all for your comments.

Just my two cents!

This is just an idea: you could put one box in "buy it now" on EBAY for $1200 and see if anyone bites.

My inclination is that they will turn out like SBA dollars; not worth anything outside of error coins and slabbed MS-68+

Ouch, just think back then you could have bought 2,000 worth in silver at around 4.40-4.60 an ounce. I'm guessing the dollars currently and in the future will have very little premium on them. There would have to be some future event to push people into modern dollar collecting in a major way to really create a good market for these. Throw those in with the BU/MS state quarter rolls and you'll have a nice inflation depreciating asset. Thats just my opinion :)

I also am aware that these Sacagaweas have to be sitting around in vaults by the hundreds of millions, also uncirculated. The question I guess I would really like answered is do the mint wrappers vs fed wrappers add premium? Fundamentally, they should not, but at least for now, they seem to. If everyone feels these are a losing proposition, I might as well just open all of them, search for errors, the coveted mule I have just one tick higher than a 0% chance of finding, and then dump them into coin counter at my local bank.

Just my two cents!

I'd say Mint wrappers have an edge over the Fed wrappers. It tells collectors that they are truly uncirculated.

I like AGgressive's approach. Sell them to Christmas shoppers. Then take the cash and buy some silver coin.

Trust the government? Ask an Indian.

You must be logged in to see this link. Interesting to read "The failure of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar with 92.7 million of them still in storage from 2000 and 2001 is a small sampling of past letdowns." That might be your answer right there.

Look at it this way.. how many collectors do you know that collect Sac dollars?

You would be much better off using the capital to hoard pennies. At least there are collectors for both the zinc and the copper ones.

You could do the math and then put them up on eBay at a BIN price that makes you a little bit if they actually sell. Only costs .35 a month to list it.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

You could buy copper bars with them. At least the copper bars might go up in value.

My price guide lists them $2.00 retail for ms63. I'm guessing MS-60s are spenders.

If you do a BUY IT NOW for $32 and charge actual shipping you only make $1.50 after fees.

Take them one or two rolls at a time to the local coin dealer and buy junk silver :)

Now that is a nice idea. I may try putting a box up on Ebay for $1500 to see if someone takes a flier on them ... probably not, but it can't hurt to try. It will cost me $0.35.

Just my two cents!
