Okay, my dad calls me up the other day to tell me that his buddy has "quite a bit" of pennies that he doesn't want. He doesn't want the trouble of taking them to the bank. So I go for a visit. He has two old glass water jugs. They are the size of the office type plastic ones these days. He told me to make him an offer. Obviously neither of us have any idea how much they are worth. I don't want to screw him, but I don't want to get screwed either.
Any ideas on approximate value? Most are coppers, (that I can see on the outside layers anyway), he says a penny is a penny. He is not expecting the coins content to come into play. I informed him, but he thinks I'M the one who is crazy for wanting that many pennies. Oh well his loss.
Any and all ideas are welcome. He says they are as good as mine, I just need to come up with a price. I need help guys. My first post and it looks like a novel....Sorry.
Deal
p.s. Great site by the way!
I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Usually one gallon can hold about $50. So 10 gallons total would be around $500. That's a rough guess. |

Welcome to the forum NotABigDeal. Great bunch of folks here.. many of them just as sick over pennies as you are.. I think you will enjoy being a member. I cash in those water jugs of coins for folks at work all the time, but I have high speed sorters and counting machines so it is easy to get the exact amount. I think MormonMetal's estimate sounds about right. A gallon is about 1 bag of pennies, so 2 5 gallon water jugs would be about $500. Another way you can do it if you don't have a counter available is by weight. Take the weight of the full jug. Dump out the pennies. Tare the empty jar. Subtract the weight of the empty jug from the original weight. Take your total pounds of pennies and multiply by 150 and you should be really close.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Ask the owner if he is selling the glass jugs with the pennies. Glass water jugs are a semi-collectable and can sell for $2 to $5 each (conservative estimate). If you doubt me, look at the price of old glass milk bottles. You might make break even with the pennies but make a profit of the glass jugs.
I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly. |

Dont want to sound like chicken little hear, you may want to pass on trying to move the glass jugs full of pennies, they weigh way too much, and the bottles will probably break easily. I have heard of people trying to lift this type of container by the neck, and the bottom of the bottle breaks out. If it does hold, even setting it down can crush the bottle's bottom too. Perhaps these are heavier glass containers than others, but wanted to just warn of possible problems. Perhaps you can gently tilt or rock the bottle and then get at least some of them out to lighten it up. I personally ruined an old Absopure bottle while making mead, poured the hot wort into the bottle, and the thermal shock broke it. I was really bummed out because the bottle was very nice up till that point. Ryedale

Perhaps a little more than $50 dollars per gallon, but I would say $500 for the lot is a fair price. A huge amount of loose pennies like that is of interest and value to people like us, but a big problem for someone who wants to cash them in.

Wrapping duct tape around a glass jug completely will keep it from breaking when picking it up or transporting. Tape entire jug, then tilt on side onto a blanket. Tape the bottom completely, and pull blanket around with jug in it. Lift it only if you have to for like stairs or getting it into your car. If you manage to pick it up and drop it, it will break, but even then all the glass sticks together and the pennies won't be all over the pavement in schards of glass.
This way the one of the worst ways to store cents. I have two full glass ones in my bedroom closet that are impossible to even scoot. My dumbness chose to use glass in the beginning because of the "look", these are my 1st hoarded cents. I should have used plastic.

Each of those containers are going to weigh between 150 to 175 pounds each plus the glass.
Be CAREFUL!

We will see this weekend I think. As long as he (guy with pennies), is back from out of town. Hopefully I have an uneventful trip from his house to mine.

p.s. I like the tape idea. Probably will do it just in case....

Be careful when lifting those things. Use proper lifting technique and the proper equipment to move it. We don't want to hear about an injury caused my lifting too many pennies. I lift a lot of them, but I only do it a box or 2 at a time.

Just a followup on the value of a glass water jug per ebay
You must be logged in to see this link.
$31 so far.
Please be careful moving the jugs for the bottles' sake and for your back's sake, I know first hand the joy of wrenching ones back and walking around like Frankenstein trying not to aggravate an already painful situation. consider either a dolly or a good sturdy hand cart to wheel the bottles out, with the bottles duct taped up first before moving.
I hope you find some nice cents for your time, trouble and expense.

O.K. guys, this isn't a locker room!~ We have ladies who come here. One of them is my sister the nun. Let's keep it about hoarding copper and if we get real wild, hoarding zinc too.

Gettin real wild! I think the 48 boxes I picked up last Friday were all 2007 Zinc! I have opened 6 so far and all have been shiny. I have 24 more boxes coming from that bank tomorrow.. probably more of the same. Seems I have taken a heavy position in zinc this last week.. whether I wanted to or not.. LOL. I kind of know how Creekrat and MormonMetal feel when they get those 2007 boxes now. But Jeez, couldn't only half of them be 2007 and the other half sortable? If I open the rest and they are all 2007 does that mean I win "Skunk of the week?" At least I can sort them really fast.

I could live with 2 boxes being new.. but I hate when really big orders are solid shiny boxes.
I picked up 24 more boxes from that bank today.. was sweatin' this pickup. This mix at least has some darkies in it. Seems to be about a 50/50 mix with rolls of new mixed in with rolls of old, no solid boxes. Should net out at around 12 boxes. Already did some roll sorting in the trunk of the car and swapped out some of the new ones for other boxes of pennies and nickels at a few other banks.
Gotta be careful about that roll sorting in the trunk of the car.. folks might think you have money. Had a guy come up to me in the parking lot and ask me if I could help him out.. said his father just died and he needed to get to Oakland. I told him sorry, all I have is pennies <G>

Unfortunately I was unable to get over to the pennies this weekend. He was busy due to just getting back in town or whatever. No sweat though, I talked to him and the deal is all but completed. Agreed to price $400. He said $300, but he is a good friend of my dads. I offered $500, he said, and I quote, "No way man, its just pennies." We came to terms at $400. Very fair deal it seems. I pay when I go to pick up. He will call me when he is resettled.
I did however finish some sorting this weekend. Just two boxes, but okay results. I do not count wheats or foreign coins in my Cu totals
1 box (actually loose rolls in a double plastic bag) customer rolls 688 Cu 7 wheats (4 very nice) 1 steel cent 3 Cu Canadian cents (one 1967 centennial) 3 dimes 1 5 pfennig Bundesrepublik Deutschland
Total 28% Cu
1 Brinks box 624 Cu 4 wheats 3 Cu Canadian cents
Total 25% Cu
Interesting side note. Some of the customer rolls had name, account numbers, and phone numbers written on them. I have never seen this before. These came from a large branch bank. Anyone else seen this? They were also on some of the nickles I purchased at the same time. That's it. I've said enough.

One of the banks in town requires a name and telephone number or just an account number if you have an account. They do this to discourage people from intentionally shorting the rolls. When i reuse the rolls i just go over the names and what have you with a black sharpie. My dump banks don't require any info.

I don't put my info on rolls either. I just get pennies from that bank. I have other banks for dumping.
