Brothers and Sisters in sorting,
As a few of you know, I've come and gone from the list from time to time. In my absences, I've been off in a closet sorting Canadian nickels for fun and profit. As I've posted elsewhere, the RCM is running its ARP at full-throttle, which has reduced the supply of coins that I find interesting. That, coupled with rather disappointing LME prices, have convinced me to give up sorting "forever".
Since I'm no longer "in the business," I figured that I'd share some of the details of what I was doing, since I suspect you will be interested in it. I am also going to put up some of my equipment for sale on eBay within the next few days. Keep your eyes peeled for that!
Until I get to doing both of those things, I figured I'd share a few photos to whet your appetite... Here is what I'm putting up tonight...
One "skid" of nickels as delivered by Brinks armored car... You must be logged in to see this link.
A recycling bin of pre-82 nickels, destined to be, well, recycled... You must be logged in to see this link.
One skid of post-82 nickels waiting to be picked up by Brinks... You must be logged in to see this link.
Hopper of nickels feeding into sorter... You must be logged in to see this link.
55gal drum of post-82 nickels, waiting to be rolled and re-deposited... You must be logged in to see this link.
Hope to post some more before the weekend is over.
Happy sortin' y'all, MaDeuce

Thanks for the post. How were you able to get ahold of so many Canadian nickels? I see you are located in the USA.

MaDeuce, Thanks for sharing. I will have to look at the photos later when I get home.. the work computer has all kinds of filters that won't let them show. I look forward to seeing your other pics as well as possibly bidding on some of your equipment when you put it up for auction on eBay. Be sure to let us know when you post those auctions.
One thing I hope you will share now that you are "out of the business" is some #'s on how much volume you were actually doing and some of the details of your operation. I have long suspected you were the monster sorter on this board.. dwarfing our meager hobby efforts. I also suspect you did OK profit-wise before the RCM messed things up with their ARP program.
I have always enjoyed your posts and hope you will continue to drop in occasionally even if you are no longer sorting.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

How did you get the Brinks account? How much did they charge you for delivery, pick up and rolling? I would love to do that myself and any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

I will absolutely share all with the group. I found the entire experience exciting and rewarding, and I made a pretty decent return while I was at it. Quite a good return, actually. I'm not doing this to boast in any way; I hope it doesn't come across that way. It's more that I think we are all like-minded individuals. I also think that it's such a rare moment in time when all the factors come together, as they did with nickels, that it's worth discussing. Finally, I found the whole thing fascinating, and I suspect that many of you will as well. And who knows, something I say might come in handy to someone someday...
It all got started when I read about the temporary regulation that the US Mint issued banning the melting and export of pennies and nickels. When I saw the article in the Wall St. Journal, I said, "Damn, I wish I'd known about that six months ago!" But it got me to thinking and reading on the net.
I ran across THIS forum. Based on what I read here, I eventually connected the dots and determined that a similar condition potentially existed with nickels in Canada. Without a doubt, I owe the people that created this form, and those that participated in it prior to my reading it, a huge debt; if I hadn't run across this forum, I really doubt that I would have been able to put all the pieces together. Y'all were definitely way ahead of the curve!
I bought one of Ryedale's sorters in February and headed up to Canada to see if the percentages that I was reading about were accurate. It was one of those things that sounded too good to be true. I've been in the business world (mainly high-tech) for about 25 years. Every single time I've seen something that looked too good to be true, I eventually discover that there is a fatal flaw. I've gotta say that the Canadian nickel situation is the only time I have ever seen when something that looked so good actually turned out to be true!
I'm short on time today, but will write more later. If there's anything in particular that anyone is interested in, let me know and I'll be sure to address it. Since I'm out of the business now, there's no reason for me to be mysterious about anything. I have a good many photos that I will post as well. Some of the stuff seemed incredible at the time (and actually still does!).

We appreciate you sharing, and look forward to more of your posts. Definately looking forward to more pics as well. We have always considered you one of us and really enjoy hearing about your experiences. You understood what many of us realized was a good opportunity and took it to a level that most of us just fantasized about. Few of us could have done what you did due to capital limitations or job commitments. I was cheering for you even though information on your activities was sparse. We get a vicatious thrill over hearing the success stories of "one of our own."
Many of the issues you dealt with are the same ones that concern those of us that do it on a much smaller scale. Things I would like to hear more about are coin acquisition, rejected coin disposal, selling and shipping the good stuff, and how the whole coin distribution system works with the banks and coin services. I am also interested in hearing what equipment you used for the various parts of your operation and the pluses and minuses of that equipment as you saw it. I really like that custom hopper you built. I am sure you can offer many valuable insights based on your experiences for those of us that might want to step up our operation a notch or two. Did you do this as a one man shop, or how many people did you have working on the operation?
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

If we ever create a "Hoarder Hall of Fame", MaDeuce will be on the first ballot.
I too, will follow this thread with great interest.
If it weren't for the wife and kids I would have hopped up to the Great White North also.
A tip of the hat my man, waiting impatiently to hear more... |
