I have the opportunity to buy a 1903 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle gold coin. However, it has been soldered into a gold bezel. Does that make the coin pretty much worthless and only worth the gold value? Is there a way to have it professionally removed from the bezel?

I guess the bezel would add a small amount to the gold content.

Is there a way to buy pre-1933 coins for an affordable price without paying a big premium? I have some pre-1933 European gold coins but would like some US.

No.

They are in high demand, that's why they have a premium.

So there is no premium on the ones that are soldered for jewlery?

These coins are in high demand as collector coins. Once damaged, they fall in the cull category which pretty much removes the numismatic premium that other gold liberties entertain.

Is that the same with the ones that you see that are cleaned or polished that APMEX sells?

No, damaged US gold will sell for around gold spot. APMEX sells pre-1933 GOLD in the following categories: AU or better, EF or better, LIGHTLY cleaned or polished (IMO VF or better). Old GOLD less than VF (unless it is a rare date) would be the next category. Old GOLD that is damaged (unless it is a rare date) would be the bottom category. Numismatic collectors gravitate to the AU or better on common date old GOLD. Sorry to say, a damaged old GOLD, unless it is a rare date, will be valued near its GOLD spot.

Foreign old GOLD is collected in really two categories: BU and EF-AU. Unless it is a rare coin, they are worth near spot, sometimes less if they are not investment grade .900 fine or better.

When gold was down in the 700s I did buy a $1 gold coin from APMEX that had a gold hook in the back. Not sure if it was a part of an earring or what. But I did buy a $1 coin from them that I guess would be considered in the damaged category.

I suggest offering your foreign GOLD for US GOLD trade on the forum. Depending on what coins you offer, someone might swap with you.

The main problem with any coin having soldered anything on it is there are numerous types of Solder and numerous methods of doing Solder. Many jewlery makers use actual Gold or Silver Solders and there are many varieties of even those. Also, there are numerous types of flux used in those processes and those too make differences in a method of removal. The worst part of attempting to remove any types of Solder is in most instances if not done by an expert, the Solder could actually flow over the coin making it even worse.
