I realize that many of you have solved this problem. However, I must report that diligence pays off. I kept asking banks, and credit unions that I have accounts with if they would simply give me or sell me pennies either from their counting machines or in rolls. SO MANY have been reluctant or seem to bothered with the idea. they are like, "what for?" So, anyways I opened an account the other day and the vault teller simply said " I can get you as much as you want." I kept a straight face and left. But was so relieved, its like they are givin em to me now, I might sort $1000 or more this week. PS. sellin em on ebay is not really that great, people simply aren't paying enough. IF you are thinking about it, I would reconsider.

Hey jman, "Tis the season" to stock up! This time of year always brings a glut of pennies to the banks - as holiday shoppers empty their jars and cans to add to the shopping fund. Many holiday fund drives also bring coin in extraordinary amounts. Get it while you can - in another month those bank tellers will revert to being "scrooges"! JD |

Congratulations jman.. a good source bank is golden! That sounds like a great source bank. Now you have a new problem.. zinc disposal. Make sure you have a good zinc disposal plan utilizing those banks that wouldn't give you pennies. Spread it around a little so you don't get cut off. As I'm sure you are aware of from reading the experience of others here, you can get cut off.. even at banks with lobby coin counting machines.. if you dump too heavily at one branch. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

just stay at it. I continue to try to add source banks. If you order regularly and are prompt to pickup, they will be more willing to expand the amount. Once you get a feel for the head teller, you can start bringing cookies or chocolate. They love their chocolate. I have had some open their chocolate bar and start eating it while I am chatting with them. Be nice, be sweet and always thank them.
You can get the chocolate coins and 1 Million dollar chocolate bars at Walgreens. |

I've resorted to dumping zincs in the Coinstar across the street. It's convenient, I don't have to count or roll, and I don't jeopardize my source banks. I do still return about a hundred a week to the banks, but in between I now buy groceries now courtesy of Coinstar. My time and travel and the wait at the bank are worth the occasional 8.9% fee. |
Hoard now and hold on!

Don't knock it. It is one of the best ways to get on the head tellers good side. Trust me , she won't forget.
Sometimes the girls at the bank that I do most of my "normal" business at will ask "Where is our chocolate?" Of course I bring some in the next time. They love it. |
