Have no debt i.e. no house payment, no car payment etc.
Whatever you can afford to have, own it outright, if you can’t afford to pay cash for it then don't try to borrow to get it, because you really don't need it.
Live within your means always and get over thinking you deserve better.
Instead of buying more, give more away.
Have more money than you need and need less than you have.
Only you can make yourself happy, not others or things.
Love more, work less, reflect often and count your blessings.
Finally, know in your mind and heart that if today was the last day you lived on earth you and your loved ones would ultimately be ok.

Agree with many but not all points. There is nothing wrong with wanting (and having) more or thinking that you deserve better. Also nothing wrong with having little or no debt. Both ideas can co-exist. You can live within a greater means...Capitalism and entrepreneurship. Pursuit of happiness comes in many forms. |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

ive always tried to live debt free. i was raised up knowing that just because the neighbors had it didnt mean we needed to have it.
there are many out there who try to make themselves happy with more and more stuff and fail to do so.
also not sure about your last point. ive promised my wife i will outlive her. i hate the thought of her having all the financial worry. i dont want my demise to be a financial burden to anyone. |

I'm glad you mention that. I have no problem with charity and giving, but have been struggling for a week or so on how to explain the why to a good friend who doesn't see the need, and is actually against it somewhat.
Could anyone provide links, essays, articles, verses, anything to help me explain the need for non compensated even anonymous charity? |

I couldn't agree more about living within your means and not borrowing money to get stuff that you really don't need in the first place. If you can buy the non-essentials with your own money though, that's not really a problem so long as the basic needs of yourself and family are met.
It is just human nature to always want more and strive to acheive it though. I think it's healthy to have goals and shoot for them, even if they are trivial/luxury things. Thats not to say these things will buy happiness, but it will bring a sense of accomplishment knowing you set your sights on something and did what was necessary to acheive it. But only after the debts are cleared and the needs are met first.

Kurr, I am not sure I have a good answer but maybe this idea might help. Tell the person to go to You must be logged in to see this link. and sign up and find a wish to grant. Maybe you buy a toy for a child's Christmas and mail it to them or help someone who needs food etc.
Also, go out the next day and spend the same amount of money on yourself. Then, be honest, and ask, which one felt better and which one really matters the most. |

The last point: Finally, know in your mind and heart that if today was the last day you lived on earth you and your loved ones would ultimately be ok.
Not trying to get to deep on you but I was thinking more eternal than the here and now. Life is just a blink of the eye, I'm just passing through, and I don’t believe this is the final stop.
