What white metals resist gold acid testing? Can anyone help me>?
I thought I was very knowledgeable of metals, but I guess I'm not. I thought if 14k acid did NOT eat through it, it must mean it was at least 14k gold, right, apparently not. Can anybody enlighten me as to why my local dealers won't buy my white gold which tests as 14k and is non magnetic. Please help! Thanks.

did the local dealers do much other than look at it? my guess is they're just not very knowledgeable about it and don't want to deal with it, otherwise they would have said it was the purity

did you have it acid tested yourself already?

a little info here You must be logged in to see this link.

ALL my local shops/dealers who have been knowledgeable AND have been purchasing all my YELLOW gold, will NOT buy white gold if it is not marked as such. They say there is a bunch of fake gold going around. Now keep in mind this ring I have is not marked gold, BUT it tests as 14k with acid, and is NOT MAGNETIC. It is soft and heavy.

The dealers claim the metal is a industrial metal like tungsten or something, but they don't know what it is, anyone?

It's just as they said, the don't buy it because it's not marked. Not everyone takes the time to acid test, they just go off of the markings. Seems stupid but it's easier and less messy.

You can send it to me. I'll have it refined and pay you 80% of the precious metal value (gold AND silver) less a $25 assay fee. The results of my tests will be 100% accurate. Plus, you can also use the proceeds to buy some MH products.

Assays are made with ICP... state of the art equipment, accurate to parts per billion calculations

I went to a local refinery here in STL, I had it tested for gold, and it was not. They did not know what it was, I said maybe platinum?, and they said they could anneal it to find out. And they did, and it turns out it is stainless steel. Apparently, all the dealers in my area were right. DO NOT BUY WHITE GOLD UNLESS IT IS MARKED is a good philosophy because SOME STEEL IS NOT MAGNETIC, and when you use acid tests, the acid does not look for gold content, it looks for base metals, but not steel, so acid will always hold on most stainless steel. I learned a great deal from this little adventure.

P.S. When the ring was annealed, it was put into a furnace, and heated until white hot, and then allowed to cool, if it was still white when cooled it would be platinum, if it was any color at all--black or gray, or rainbow it was nothing.

The thing to take away from this experience is that acid testing does not work on stainless steel
