Hi everyone. I haven't been here in a while. I had a fairly decent sized collection of Jefferson nickels that I had hoarded (all from 1939-1959, all P or D mints); I decided to give up and returned them to the bank a while ago (don't worry I kept all S mint coins). I mentioned this to my father a while ago, and he suggested that I should've kept them, as they may be worth $$ someday. I know the market for '39-'59 P and D mint Jeffersons (especially common dates) isn't much today, even for graded coins with a high MS number. Should I start collecting/hoarding again? I have to admit it was kind of fun, and I did get 1 V nickel, 4 buffalo nickels, and about 6 or 7 war nickels (including one box that had 3 in it!!). So I guess what I'm asking is should I resume my collecting/hoarding of these coins? Or is it better for me just to stick to dimes and half dollars and keep trying for pre '65 silver coins??

If you want to hold wealth, but not profit at this point nickels are a good spot for your money.

| Cody- as for goals, I'd like to separate all the older nickels to save for potential numismatic/collector value. All V's, buffs, and '39-'59 Jeffersons. |

I agree with 'gothboi30' ... I don't expect to see immmeidate spectacular rises in nickle on either the numismatic side or the 'metal content' side. But setting some aside is a good idea and definitely worth sorting the Jeffs from 1938 - 1963 (I don't stop at 1959 ) for potential numismatic value.
Also, if you can find some war nickles, with the price of silver going up, those 'little puppies' are probably worth a little over a dollar a piece in silver content.
Haven't found any Buffs or Libertys ... generally only finding 1 or 2 'future numismatic' coins, per roll. But I am sure that along with that elusive 1914D Lincoln I am sure is waiting for me somewhere, surely there must be at least on really nice, key date Buffalo just waiting for me to pick up the roll from the bank that he's hiding in |
