Well since I moved to a small town a few months ago I started to go to auctions? I was wondering if anybody else here goes to auctions?
Today I went to my first coin auction. It was a blast. I was probably the youngest there; everyone was well over 40. All anybody talked about at the whole thing was coins. I was the only one there who was buying coins for their silver content, everyone else was bidding on high quality coins. There were a few 1916-d mercury dimes that went for around 1200 and some Morgan’s that went for well over 1000. There was a 1/10 gold eagle that went for 115 which I didn't think was all that bad, but I was low on cash.
Here was what I picked up
30-1921 Morgan’s at 13 each (not much wear on any of them)
3-peace dollars at 13 each
34-90% halves at 6.00 each
10-mercury dimes at 1.20 each
25-war nickels for 18.00
50-40% halves for 2.00 each
If anybody has the chance to go to a coin auction I would strongly recommend it. I bet you will have a good time.

sweet deal on the morgans and peace. auctions are a great place to interact with other collectors as well - especially if you dont have a local coin club |

There was alot of talk about gold there, everybody was talking about how there was no way it can stay at this price. I just kept my mouth shut. |

My local numismatic group has auctions about once a month. I go and try to hit the items (usually just silver, but one time it was gold!!!!) that no one wants and that I can get at or very near spot or bullion prices. I don't get much sometimes, and I have to accept that. I also need to be strict about what price is too steep for me and just say "no" when the bids fly too high. Better to walk away and keep cash for another day and a better deal than to get one item too high and have buyer's remorse! Good luck! |

sweet deal on the morgans and peace dollars! I like the coins but never have liked the numistatic premium on them, so I don't have any. been meaning to try some auctions myself hopefully I can have as much success as you had at yours. |

great buy on the silver dollars. I was buying them up at 13 bucks a pop when silver was around 14.00 an ounce and that was a decent deal.

I joined 2 coin clubs here (same members both clubs), they have an auction at club meetings (if anyone brings anything). It is very wierd, like noone will bid after the first person. I remember the second one I was at the President had a bunch of stuff, then he pulls out this Rebel hat pin and goes on about how everyone wanted the one off his hat. Guy behind ME bid .50, I bid .75 (you'da thought I started cussin a blue streak the way everyone looked at ME). I might be able to get some deals (first bidder) but I don't think I wanna sell anything there xcept starting price is sale price. And sos you know that hat pin is my good luck piece and I wear it to every meeting just to spite the old farts. HH all, Mark |

Thanks for all the replies. I was wondering how you can find out about coin clubs in your area? |

Go to coin shows and ask around. Here's one site to find coin shows:
