I have a simple question however its no about coppers, do the new 2009 zincolns all have no mint mark. I ask becouse I recently filled out another set of penny books and was going to purchase several more books to begain filling and was wondering if any of the 2009 have any mint marks (i.e. P, D or S). I have done some serching around on ebay but there were none specified and to save time I will leave it to the wealth of knowledge or brain trust of the board to anwser.

| They still have P, D and S mint marks. With the S being in the proof sets. I have some of all of them. |

D = Denver Blank = Philadelphia S = San Francisco ( proof )
Currently the Lincoln cent is the only coin that does not always have a mint mark, using a "D" when struck in Denver but lacking a "P" when struck at the Philadelphia mint |

geo54, I have the same problem. Thousands of 2009 cents, only a handful so far have had a D mint mark. I think that has much to do with the distribution. In 5-10 years you will probably get a decent balance of the two, but as new products are released, you're mostly going to get the one from whichever mint sends to the reserve banks which supply your local banks and merchants.
Interestingly, I'm from Illinois, and we used to be a "mostly D" area. Now apparently we're a "mostly P" area.
But yes, there were P and D coins of all four designs. The mint website lists their mintages in the hundreds-of-millions each. And the fourth design was released yesterday, so it should be in your hands in a matter of weeks.
Just keep looking!!!

Actually, I sorted a $50 bag earlier this year (very soon after the type 3s were released), and the stats don't really bear out just how disproportoinate the distribution has been. But here they are nevertheless:
2009 type 1....127 2009D type 1....13 2009 type 2....196 2009D type 2....34

| About ten years ago, I had a "boys vs girls" competition at a week of vacation Bible school. There were two wheelbarrows parked by the door as the kids came into the church, marked boys and girls. They were supposed to see which one could bring in more pennies, which would be taken to the bank and counted, then the total would be given to a charity. I was going to weigh them throughout the week to get a crude running total, and so I left them throughout the week in the church. Someone was just nonchalantly digging through them and found an INDIAN before I got a chance to go through them myself! At least she was a friend of mine. But she didn't collect coins! No fair. I still haven't found an Indian. But I haven't searched nearly as many rolls as I've read a lot of you have. Someday... |

| The area in which you live definitely makes a difference on what mint marks you come across. Living in Southeast Kansas, I have seen only the 2009-D pennies so far, not one 2009 Philadelphia penny yet. D's dominate here, and it's pretty hard to come by any P mint marks in any years or denominations. |

You just need to "sort more" George.. 20+ boxes? Some of us sort that many in a day.
I have only found 1 Indian this year, 12 last year, and 9 the year before. You have to sort a lot of pennies to find any Indians.
I have gotten hardly any 09 pennies from either mint out here in CA. I have had to import most of mine from other members. I just started to see a few recently in my sorts. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

uthminsta (Aaron) - you said:

What part of Illinois are you from? I am also from the "Land of Lincoln" but very near to the capital. Without looking I can't recall my 2009 P to D ratio, but my 2008 cents are heavily weighted to D's, not P's.
I get my cents from $50 loose bags at a CU. Maybe it depends on your location in Illinois, type of institution and/or where they get their cents. |
Most recent book I've read: "Meltdown" by Thomas E. Woods Jr. Current book: "I.O.U.: Why Everyone Owes Everyone & No One Can Pay" by John Lanchester |

I live near Effingham.
In college I lived in the TOWN of Lincoln, IL You must be logged in to see this link. which has the distinction of being the ONLY town named for Abe BEFORE he was president. I lived just a couple of blocks from where he used to practice law.
Anyone else here from THE LAND OF LINCOLN? |

Well found my 2009 D in this box to finish filling my book. Thanks for the info. I'm located in FL and our mints are close to even leaning a little more towards the P. However this was the first 09 D I have come across and glad to have it, know it will not haunt me, HAHA. I know I need to bump my box #'s up but its a little had to do when you hand sort and are stuck in this economy. Know I will start on book 1 again however have a feeling you may see me in WTB boards these early date wheat's are getting scarce, lots of 30's-50's but haven't seen anything older than a 20 in quite some time. Well happy sorting, and thanks again for the info.
Come on Indian!!!! |
