Decent. Explains why NOT to buy TIPS. Plus the fact that inflation and CPI are manipulated by basic accounting principles.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

All it takes to get a handle on the erosion of the dollar's purchasing power is to have a good memory (or some year-old newspapers) and make a trip to the grocery store. Prices here have been inching higher by 1-3% every couple of weeks. Frightenting to think what they might be if diesel and gas was still $4/gallon.

Today's sale prices (when they do occur) are last year's regular prices. That rings true even as many of the contents have shrunk while the package size has remained the same. An 11 oz bag of Lay's Potato Chips now with an imprinted price of $3.99 on the bag? It's frightening where this economy seems to be headed. We're goin' down hard.

While most of us still place our trust in God, it's likely that God is hesitant to trust us now. Sad and pitiful.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I work in a grocery store, and I see the prices creep up all the time, while the size of the package gets smaller.

The article was short and not too informative but true.

I see prices of things in the store and just shake my head in disbelief.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

I don't understand what this writer is referring to. He says the CPI fails to account for the price per pound of sugar, but when I look at the You must be logged in to see this link. for sugar, it's measured in price per pound. What's he talking about?

Item: Sugar, white, all sizes, per lb. (453.6 gm)

I got a reply from the author. He acknowledged his error. Of course, the government could still screw with the data - that is not beneath them to do. Here's his reply:

quote:
Thank you so much for your note and question in regards to the article, "Why Purchasing Power is More Important than Investment Profits," I believe there may have been a misunderstanding in my research process. The CPI measures sugar by "all sizes" and by "33-80 oz pkg," and I utilized the second measurement to compare the sizing of packages of sugar over time.

However, in reevaluating the data, I have found that both "all sizes" and "33-80 oz pkg" are measured "per lb," which then accounts for the change in volume that has occurred over the last few decades.

Thank you very much for clarifying the analysis with me. I apologize for any inconvenience this error in my analysis may have caused. I have subsequently revised the article to discuss the failure of the CPI to track living wages, and I provided an example to illustrate the point.
