Do you watch out for wheaties? I know they're rare, but when you do hundred at a time, wouldn't it be worthwhile to hunt a little? They typically sell on eBay for 3.5-5X FV.
In other words, I'm kinda saying, with so little demand for copper cents per se, wouldn't it be worthwhile to hunt down some key dates (assuming they'll be sitting there anyway, might as well find something).

I always go through my copper cents and pluck the wheaties out. I use the machine to seperate the copper cents out from the zinc and then I go through the copper cents and pull all the wheat cents out. That is part of the fun of it for me. It is amazing how many wheat cents you can pile up when you sort as many pennies as I do. Of course the real treat is when you find an Indian cent.. but that doesn't happen very often.

I have yet to find an Indian cent, but I do enjoy finding the wheaties. It's amazing how you can still find coins that have been circulating for almost a century. I often wish my coins could talk and tell me the tales of their travels. |

I have only found 3 Indian cents so far.. but I sort a lot of pennies. The oldest is an 1865 Indian.. a little better date. I was shocked to find that one.

I currently do not sort for the wheats....leaving them in there for the next guy to enjoy the search.....I feel it gives my copper hoard another value dimension. When the day comes that I scrap my copper...I'll search for the wheats first....but for now, they are still in there. Two weeks ago, I hit some customer rolls that were busting with wheats....everytime I looked at the Ryedale copper keep bin there was a wheat on the top of the pile....so I know there were a bunch in there.

I am not sure I am a big horder (been called worse). I normally only do about $100-300 a week or so. I take wheats but I have 2 kids to help. |

Snappy, You must be sneaking out of town to get them. I think that level certainly makes you a big hoarder.

I sneak out of town to dump them.
I have 12 bank accounts in 4 towns and dump in 9 banks some have branches in other towns that so I don't hit one dump bank to much. my town only has 2 banks 1 is wells fargo and they have been nice about ordering boxes for me and holding all their bags (the ones they get from costmers) for me. road trips give me a good chance to dump in banks that I have never hit and will not hit again for a long time largest dump $7560.95 (lots of everything) It was at us bank. Went in and asked if they were busy that it was time to dump my piggy bank. told them wife told me anything that went into my piggy bank was for my "boat fund" before taking it in. after the first teller said "I think you can get a good one for that" I just deposit everything and never ask for money back Works better that way I think.
I do keep copper pennies. I also search/keep old .05 (pre 59), silver dimes and silver halves I don't search quarters I have done over $2700 and only got 1 silver so gave up on them. |

I have it pretty easy. My main dump bank is right in town and they will take anything I bring in and ship it out to their central branch. They even provide me with stacks of free heavy duty shipping bags so I can just hook the bags up to one of my counters, set the batch stop and let er rip. I don't even have to roll any coins up anymore, even though I have 2 rolling machines that made that process a lot easier when I had to. I can even pick up large quantities of coins from my dump bank because they move so much coinage I never get my own coins back. It is certainly convenient to be able to drop off and pick up in one trip at the same bank half a mile from my house.
