I have been reading you guys for over a month now, figured its time to chime in... a little story: read an ad on craigslist for "old pennies" for sale. called and talked with the women who informed me her father had past away and he collected pennies and that she had 650 pounds of pennies in coffee cans. I asked where her house was. after arriving at her home I opened ten different containers took a small handful out of eeach container and quickly scanned dates, the newest coin was a 71...she said she counted one container and it had $35 worth in it, she also weighed it and it weighed 24 pounds, i did some quick math in my head and said, i will give you $35 for each container as that is what they are worth, face value....so now i am home, just counted one container (random selection) it had $38.62 in it.... 63.5% copper 36.5% zinc with 240 canadians and only 1 wheat was hoping for more wheat but couldnt be happier with the copper content...and have a feeling from a sampling it may actually average better than that. anybody know anythin about canadians? Is there any canadians worth anything, i know there copper but any other value?

Welcome!
Keep detailed notes as you search each container and you will be glad you did later on. Really neat to go through old lots of coins that way to see what you find.
Enjoy. |

| Nice way to start out- Aloha! |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

You paid $35 for $38.62, cool score on that alone. 36.5% Cu, double cool.
I don't know about the pricing, but some of the varities to look for in the Canadians are;
'47 Maple Leaf, blunt and pointed "7" '53-'55 NSS or NSF (No Shoulder Strap/No Shoulder Fold) '65 small and large beads '85 blunt and pointed "5" 4 varieties of the '06. Zn with and without the "RCM" mint mark. Fe with the "RCM" mint mark or a "P" for plated instead.
There are others, but these are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. The experienced numismatists will can provide more info.
Oh, and

report on bucket number 2: weight of exactly the same...24lbs I did not count the coppers all out this time, so i dont know a total quantity but there were only 56 zincs in the whole bucket....thats 56 out of like 3700 coins (one and a half boxes) there were only 3 wheats though, i think the old man sorted the wheats out as he went or something. either way the copper count is unbeleivable and lots of canadians and i got over 600 specials (thats what i call the coins worth 3-5 cents each, the 66,69,71,a few "s" years and whatnot). also got 81 1972 to look at later for doubledie.....i think i am going to wait on handsorting the rest and do it when I win the ryedale in the christmas contest...lol |
