Looks like we have a wide diversity of hoarders here. Should we add a new category called "Super Mega Hoarder" for folks that do over $1000 a week?
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I kind of thought you might be. Hope you answered the poll so you get counted. $1500 a week is a lot.. even more than I do. Hope you have your zinc disposal system all set up if you are going to play at that level. Also make sure you have a good sturdy cart for wheeling them in and out of the bank.

| I think you have to get outside of the box and look at other copper sources. I gather that wire and other stuff that would get thrown out and throw that in with my collection. |

| I'm only a regular hoarder. Though I buy and hold about $100.00 a week in pennies what I have is unsorted and about 25- 30% of it is copper coins. |

I was also wondering if there are any hand sorting serious and up hoarders out there? [/quote]
I hand sorted $115 this week by Friday and didn't have the chance to go to the bank to get more pennies for the weekend. I also sorted $1080 in halves. |

2) I could not find any scrap market for the Canadian CuNi...thus assume it will be very difficult to find a CuNi market for US nickels in the future. I think is will be very difficult to get the Ni value out of the 5 cent piece....probably just the copper content is all you will be able to scrap???
my local scrp yard said they would accept non US nickle coins at 80% of their metal value. That makes a Canadian niclel worth 10.4 cents for scrap |

Well in the space of a month I went from not even knowing about this to sorting ~$100 per week by eye to buying a Ryedale and now I've sorted $1,000 in the last couple of days and have another $1,500 in boxes waiting on me. Total so far about $1,250 and I've got one bucket of 110 pounds of copper and am working on my second. I've dumped about $700 in zinc so far too.
So I guess you could call me an insane out of control sorter who bit off a big bite and will probably settle between $500 to $1,000 per week. Next week I will refrain from ordering bank rolls (give my primary bank a break from two straight weeks of 50 boxes) and will try to buy several hundred dollars of customer wrapped rolls in drive by's at various banks just to mix things up.
The next time I go to my main dump bank I'll have at least $600 of zinc to deposit, probably will have to find another branch of the same bank that will accept bagged coins soon to keep up with the volume.
My main goal is to get $3,000 or so face value hoard in copper, or right at one ton. Of course if I start selling copper (which I will desperately need to do to keep cash flow going) it will take longer, but hey, I'll take profit over a slower rate of accumulation any day!
What have I gotten myself into?!

| I am a teeny weeny newbie hoarder. And I am a sorter, not a hoarder, since I can't afford to keep them. I have about $70 copper after two weeks, and probably 2/3 of it is from the second week. Currently trying to sell my coppers... You must be logged in to see this link. |

| Wow. I'm shocked I'm considered a "Mega Hoarder". I thought for sure I was a small time player, as I do about $400 a week. I guess I just look at HCBTT and c140 (and see people like WilliamC get $1000 in one shot!) and think that everyone is doing more than me. I was wondering how all you guys found the time for all this! |

I just treat it like a part-time job. I know that every week i will invest 3-4 hrs in pickup/dump and another 3-4 hrs sorting/hoarding/organizing. In the past year, that has added up to 400 hours....a lot of time...
I think it is time well spent....but it does take away from time i would spend with family and friends. |

| I consider myself a regular hoarder, with a standing order of 2 boxes a week from my main branch. Occasionally I will increase my orders with another branch if I know some extra time is coming up. For example, the week before I ordered 2 boxes of nickels and 4 boxes of pennies above what I normally do. On Friday I picked up 5 extra boxes of pennies because I knew I was off from work Friday and would be spending the weekend in front of the tv watching NCAA basketball. I cant just sit there and watch the games, so this was a perfect way to spend my time. Unfortunately I got through the 5th box last night and now have none to sort today...lol. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I've done more buying than sorting. I buy on the average $100-$250 per week. I need to sort as I have no zincs for gas....

Serious Hoarder here. I hand-sort 4 boxes each week -- pick 'em up on Tuesday, return the zincs to the CU (which has the complimentary coin counter) on Friday. My 8-year old rolls up the coppers for me, for which I pay him $1 per night. |

How many others have "zinc slaves" I have a 9 year old who re rolls for me and a 5 year old who can find the wheats and read the dates. I pay them in wheat cents and the 5 year old loves the canadian (the shinier the better mostly goes for the steel cents) |

For starters I started out small, one box then another. The bank you order pennies from can order anything you need- though you don't want to be dumping your halves into your supply line so... I got a dump bank with a half dozen branches in town each with a selfservice coin counter so I am doing all the work. I also setup an acct with a CU that gets coin from a different place than my dump bank and also has many branches.
This brings up a question that maybe I've just missed seeing on here: How can you find out who your bank's source is for coins without raising alarms (no pun intended) by inquiring what their supplier is? |

Most of the boxes I get from Regions are marked CWI, which I suppose is Coin Wrap International. I know Brinks and Loomis also supply coins.
In Memphis is a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, that's where my bagged pennies go for counting. I suppose it's likely that the Banks and such just subcontract the coin purchases from companies that deal directly with the Fed to purchase and wrap the coins.

Just $275 per week! I recall a poll here a long while back when many if not most members had a total copper penny hoard of $250 or less. How times change. |

| I just can't stop. Today, I even bought $119 worth of pennies from my school's cancer fund as a favor (I saved them from hauling 11, 900 pennies to the bank)! I think I'll even make a few "drive-buys" on the way home. |
