Anyone else think this raises a lot of concern about one company owning such a huge part of the U.S. transportation system?

i personally think its a wise investment for buffet. as far as concern i guess i dont see any problems with it. UP is a bigger company and buffet doesnt have much stock in them. im curious to see some of the other members thoughts though.

on a side note ive loaded millions of bushels of corn and wheat on BNSF cars. it was quite a fun job really.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

Proof that ol' Warren has lost his touch, or he thinks he is Cornelius Vanderbilt. A RAILROAD? An historically moribund investment.

If I was a Berk shareholder I would bail, sooner rather than later.

The USA's future seems to be providing raw materials for the producers of this world. Further, as gas prices rise to much higher levels, it will be trains, not trucks, that will economically do most of the transporting of petro distillates. I think Buffett sees Burlington Northern as a key transporter of materials in the world soon to come.

railroads are a monopoly. you can't build another one because you can't assemble the land rights.

obama may come out with a national rail system like europe.

prices for rail are down because we are in a deep recession. this is called buying low. no one does it better than buffett.

prospects are good considering the economy will improve eventually, rail is more energy efficient than trucking, and north american union could spur more traffic.

so i dont' think its as dumb as it looks

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

Pipelines, not trucks, economically do most of the transporting of petro distillates.

BNSF is a already a fully developed, key transporter of materials. Buffet just wants a giant Lionel set to play with.

ON SECOND THOUGHT,

Buffet is dumping his FRNs for something of value. Shrewd.

After the unicracker, majority of Mogas and other clean fuels on pipelines. Truck racks for local retail distribution. Asphalt, coke, NGL's on rail.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.
