This past year I started putting away some heavy coins volume unlike any of my collecting past where coins fit in tubes, folders and collecting boxes. I found new 2008P nickel rolls, a full box of 1998P halves, two boxes of LP2's (philly) and now a full box of 2006P nickels. I also have a lot of mint products that come in paper rolls packaged in cardboard boxes.
After my coin collection I started fifty years ago surfaced last Thanksgiving, I had a lot of evidence of how time impacts unprotected coins. I had a fair amount of degradation and this included proof sets in original plastic. My state is naturally humid. I joke that it's the wet basement capitol of the world.
I keep certain coins in jars and others in premuim tupperware (any comments on the use of kitchen grade storage containers and degradation?)
Anyway, the bricks of pennies nickels and quarters are heavy and bulky. After a recent ammo delivery where water resistant storage boxes were included, I got the idea that I could start using these to store coins.
What do you all use to store the big stuff?

| I store both my ammo and my silver in steel ammo cans. I use the small .30 caliber cans (3 3/4 x 11 x 7 1/4"h.) for the silver as any size larger get awfully heavy. I put the coins in the small plastic tubes and they stack perfectly inside. I then put them in my gun safe which has a dehumidifier. |

Thanks BOHICA. The metal US cans have superior seals. Bet that safe is heavy, lol. Lead and silver.
I once got a fabulous buy at a coin show on tubes of BU Morgans.
I waited till a Sunday at closing after a three day show at the local Masonic Temple.
Older gentleman packing up his table and I asked him if he would take $15 each 1889's and others (not 1921) and he said yes because he was so tired of carrying them back to the car.
Never going to another show except to look before closing.

This is a very shrewd and intelligent idea. Thank you. |

Huh, my ammo boxes are full of, you guessed it, ammo.... Guess I need to shoot more.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. I use ammo cans as a part of my sorting system. Nothing else I have used holds up quite as well to the weight. When I sort I dump the coins into a short .50 can by my feet.
You can fit $500 loose halves in a .30 can, and $1000 in a short .50 can.
I have also used ammo cans to dump halves when I don't have Coin lock bags for the bank in question. |

| I have also seen the safe of the local bullion dealer and he had a few ammo cans on the floor of the safe, probably filled with Au. |

I recently rolled all of my loose change and now store the rolls in the .30 cal ammo cans. One can will hold exactly $700 in rolled quarters. Heavy little bugger too.
And yes, my safe weighs a ton (literally!). |
