Zinc is over $1 a pound. If it ever returns to its 5-year high, its melt will reach almost 120% of its face value.

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.
-Caxton's edition of Aesop's Fables, 1484

By then our pennies will (should) be made out of something else or just not made anymore.

My bet? Next year it'll surpass the previous high as the dollar crashes. That'll save us the trouble of dumping zincs hehehe Dang, we have so many options to become feelthy rich, where do I invest my limited funds to get the most bang for the buck. Do I use a target pistol and aim for the bullseye (silver) or just shotgun the whole pile (silver, gold, copper, nickel... forget palladium).

Hoard now and hold on!

I think your speculation that the US is heading for bigger problems is too extreme. Use these metals as a hedge against larger losses. Sure you come out on top if the whole economy crashes, but only a little better. And on the flip, you'd end up losing out if the market rebounds. If you haven't been putting money towards the market during the slump months of '08 - '09, you may have missed some wonderful times to buy at record lows.

I always have to chuckle when anyone thinks they'll get rich off penny hoarding.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.

It's not about "Kool-Aid", it's about diversifying yourself and insuring your chances for a solid return on ALL your investments. Surely folks here should understand the merits of a diverse porfolio!

Just like saying "this time it's different" is wrong on the too-optimistic up-side of a growing bubble, it is also wrong to say that on the down-side. As far as I can tell stock of companies have been traded for hundreds of years [including (in)famous ones like the East India Tea Company!] Last time I checked Great Britain was still kicking around and doing fairly well, a couple of hundred years after their great empire collapsed. So let's all hope the USA ends up as well off as they did in a couple of hundred years or so. I'd call that a minor success!

Most recent book I've read: "Meltdown" by Thomas E. Woods Jr. Current book: "I.O.U.: Why Everyone Owes Everyone & No One Can Pay" by John Lanchester
