I imagine more than a few forum members are familiar with MoneyandMarkets.com and the work of Martin Stein. Excellent website and worth reading the daily email subscription. They have a new service which has linked up with a financial studies institution which purports to examine financial data going back three hundred years and which illuminates peaks and troughs in investment cycles with amazing accuracy. I didn't feel like taking the plunge for the $1995 sign-up rate they are charging, but here's what I gleaned for free! According to their forecasting methods in 2010 the dollar is set to utterly collapse, in 2011 precious metals are predicted to skyrocket to a peak, and in 2012 (gee, there's that pesky date again) the stock markets will plummet to levels not experienced in decades (which also coincides, pointed out by Robert Kiyosaki, with the beginning of withdrawals from 401k's and IRA's by the retiring baby boomers. So as early as next year we might witness an upsurge in copper and nickel prices based in the increasingly worthless currency FRN's.

Wouldn't the collapse of the dollar and skyrocketing of PMs happen simultaneously?

You would think so, but I can understand how an immediate repricing of silver and gold could occur, say if the dollar devalued by half then they go up double, but then as the public catches on to the worthlessness of their walletfulls of monopoly money they would shift their investment targets to the precious metals arena to preserve their purchasing power and thus continue to drive up the prices into the following year. Personally, I think that PM's and base metals will essentially become priceless and have currently unimaginable purchasing power in the future, unfortunately if that happens it will likely be the result of Weimar/Zimbabwe hyperinflation. I used to tell the guys at the fire station who were all feeling fat and sassy with our little projected pensions that someday soon a pizza will cost $3,000. You're going to have a lot of "haves and have-nots" in this country, the difference being those who prepared for the implosion of the dollar with the steady accumulation of PM's. Make sure your hoard is well-hidden! Check out some of Nickelless's posts on TEOTWAWKI survival stuff while you're at it.

Thanks for the kind words, Beauanderos!

This AP story today also mentioned that the dollar has lost more than 15 percent of its value since March:
