I have an acquaintance that wants to sell me some sets of silver rounds or bars. These are decorative collector sets of U.S. presidents and the like. Unfortunately, none of these are marked in terms of purity or weight, and he doesn't have the information to identify the sets. He just has them in a plastic bag - no wood box or frame or anything. He also has some disney ones.
Is there a site or a book that would be useful in identifying these? I don't have any pics at this time but hopefully will get some.

These are most likely Sterling Silver. Check out the site below:

Even though they aren't fine, those are some sweet looking coins. |

Oh yea, I know sterling has always been .999's bad little step brother, but I've noticed it seems to be bringing more and more on ebay lately- not sure why. If you can get these for a good price you might have a play there. |

If the coins weigh 500 grains each, I would pay $10 per coin. Something you should just try to resell right away IMO.
Usually, Disney silver is .999 and they have a nice premium on them.

Franklin Mints are alot of fun (considering the relatively few US silver coin issues that are affordable) and provide a nice change of pace. Most all medallions are 92.5% pure silver, so if you can determine the weight you can derive a bid based on melt. When I used to bid on these you could routinely buy them for 10 - 20% less than melt. Consider this, there isn't much of a secondary market for these, on the other hand, any set issued before the great "meltdown" of 1980 is much scarcer than sets minted censuses would have you believe. I have a book at home that has most of the statistics if you can provide a better description. You can PM me if you want. |

where do the Disneys come up for sale?
Also, my guy has some space shuttle silver rounds from early missions. They are marked with the mission number. |
