Hello again. I always run into those folks who have a few junk silver coins that they have found in change but they never want to part with them. I offer 10x but no takers. Any advice on getting those few coins?

Hi there-
10X is too low. Remember, don't get into metals to MAKE money, only to save it. If you offer whatever coinflation pricing is at, you'll probably get sellers.

Maybe those who have found a few silver coins in circulation don't want to part with them since it is the only silver they have.

It's about the motivation of the owner/seller of the item. Someone that is not looking for a buyer, is not really looking to sell. If you are approaching / bringing up the topic, expect resistance. If they respond to your ad, they are motivated sellers. I buy single coins often, brought to my business and buy for way less than 10x. Search the forum on the topic of buying silver for less...and good luck! |

Just let them know yout always willing to buy. A lot of times a month later or so they call...
But I have found that most of the time they think what they have is more valuable then what it is. Some people are afraid to sell what they don't understand. So they figure its better to hold onto it.
Let them know your willing to help them appraise what they have and all you ask in return is an opportunity to buy from them before they sell to a coin dealer or someone else.
For example. I work with a guy he is looking at getting values of his Mothers coin collection to sell. He told me some of the coins he has and what a dealer offered him.
One that peaked my interest was a 1831 Bust half. The dealer offered hime about 50.. SO its probably worth closer to 100 at least. maybe more if the dealer is real scummy.
I said I would probably be interested in it and guarantee I would offer a better price + I would help him with the rest (appraising)...
I can't wait to see this half and other goodies he may have...

Thanks for all the advice. I enjoy finding new sources for silver, and love to see what people have. I found a place near my home that sells junk at 10x...the owner said he could'nt find anybody that wants to buy at any price. oober, I think your right, I believe people fear selling something that may be really valuable, but don't take the time (or know how) to research what they have. Wags, I just throw out the 10x because its so easy to figure in my head, I would pay more but it never gets that far. I guess it is a learning process like everything else. I never have been one to haggle prices. more advice welcome! |

Hi there-
No, you're right- there are lots of places to get silver at 10X or much lower.... ; ), but I don't think they'll be selling for 10X on THIS forum... :P

If he can't find any buyers at 10x, then offer 9x for the entire lot and flip it here for 11x. |

bman, that might work. some of these people love the history associated with older coins.
Slick, I know you are in the Carolinas...and I know you would buy everything at 10x, thats why my source must remain a secret!
Hoard, I think my guy would go as low as 8x. too bad most of my money is tied up (freed up?) in PM. |

Go make your deal at the lower price, then sell some of your other PMs here at the higher price to pay for the new stuff. You dollar cost average down this way. |

I have found to offer going rate, some if not most "dealer" types meaning retail only offer 4 to 9 times face when buying and want to sell at 13 to 15 so you just be competitive, it will show up. |
