Hi,

I am a hand sorter and pretty much exclusively for the last 2 years have been sorting pennies. I just started taking the plunge into nickels. However, with a full time job, there are not enough hours in the day to continue sorting as many pennies as I use to and add on nickels, dimes, etc.

For those of you who handsort, how many exclusively sort pennies? How many do a mix? Is the best mix nickels and pennies or are adding dimes into my sorting worth it?

Here is my two cents.

Why don't you invest the $40 or $50 into a Penny Miser Machine. That way, you can sort pennies and nickels at the same time.

I like to hand sort and I sort pennies, nickels and dimes. I'm slow but it is cheap enough entertainment. And, if you look carefully enough, you never know what you might find!

Enjoy.

When I was doing just pennies, I could do 4-5 boxes a week. Now I do more nickel boxes than pennies. I like copper. I love silver.
When I get a notion to do more pennies, I pick up an extra box or two.

A lot of the time I'll get a box each of pennies, nickels and dimes if I can. You never know which denomination will have the good stuff.

I go with whatever they have in stock. I pick up all the pennies they have available.. and then take the dimes and nickels. They really like that I am willing to take all those dimes and nickels so they don't have to ship them. Dimes are a much faster sort. Just edge check 'em.. drop the clad in the automatic rolling machine and deposit at your dump bank the next day. Of course I always take whatever halves they have too. The main denomination to avoid is quarters.. low silver yeild.. and a much better chance of getting shorted.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Cents, I sort a few rolls each week. Nickels get saved unless they are Canadian Steel.

I have given up on Halves. I have never tried Quarters or Dimes.

Right now my day job is demanding enough I don't have time to sort.

Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended.

Well Im glad im diversifying into nickels now since in the last 2 weeks I have found a silver nickel, a buffalo nickel, and now a proof nickel.

The manager at the bank keeps trying to get me to take her dimes but that is a lot of money to tie up.

I stick with the cents. If I have extra money or don't have the time to sort I will buy nickels. They come into the house, but they don't leave. At least not yet.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

Just cents for now, but switching to nickels is getting tempting

I think it's fun to switch up the demominations now and then.

PennySaved.. take that bank manager's dimes. They are the fastest demomination to sort. You just edge check them. Dump them somewhere else after you pull out all the silver. If they have more than you want to get at one time, just pick up a reasonable amount each time you stop in there. You will become the bank manager's favorite customer.. and that will pay off big time later down the road. One of the ways I maintain good relationships with my banks is by being willing to take whatever they want to get rid of.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Nickels are my least favorite, because they take me the longest to sort. But I do them anyway to keep my banks happy.

When I was hand sorting cents seriously(b4 my ryedale, thanks andy)I found it almost necessary to sort a box of nickels occasionally to break up monotony and give the eyes some rest. And finding some war nicks and buffs gives you the added vigor to go forth and sort more! I also sorted dimes and halves, its fun to find a new coin for the collection, you can fairly quickly have a good start on a U.S. coin type set started, and gives you something to show for all your "lost" time sorting to the family or whoever. If your serious about sorting your methods should evolve over time, there is no one right way to do it for everyone.Humans just can't do the same thing over and over without going crazy at some point.

I've only been doing this for three weeks now, and my opinion could change... but for now I like just sticking with the pennies. I think the potential return is greatest here and I like the positive reinforcement of having a high rate of keepers with the very rare "Wow, I can't believe that's still floating around in change" old Lincoln. I do agree your eyes could get fatigued, that a machine would make things much quicker/easier (though not affordable to all - after all, we are saving pennies), and that variety is the spice of life. Regardless of which you choose, coin-sorting is a fun, absorbing hobby that has many little payoffs. Has anyone in realcent ever compiled the stats various people report so that a guideline for newbies could suggest the best field for them to plough? Of course, Bluegill just distorted the dimes for the next hundred years, lucky dog!

Hoard now and hold on!
