Hey Everyone -
I have a question for everyone here who got this set. I had some serious quality problems with mine and wanted to see if anyone had the same issue(s)?
Before I get to that, I'll quickly say that I've been lurking on this site for a long time now and decided to join the community and make my first post. I sort pennies primarily, but also do halves occasionally.
Anyways, to get the point of my post, I received my Lincoln Coin and Chronicle set quite quickly after the shipping date of 10/30/09. I was please with how fast it shipped. I opened it up and was very pleased with the quality of the coins, which is the most important part. Each coin was in perfect shape, most importantly, the silver dollar. However, I am quite disappointed with three things.
One: They forgot to send the Certificate of Authenticity (COA). It was nowhere to be found and wasn't in the spot it should have been, slipped under that strip of cloth in the corner of the side with Lincoln's photo. I hadn't noticed this at first due to the excitement of getting the set and looking at the coins.
Two: I open up the three fold case to the area of the two page hand written Gettysburg Address. There was what appears to be glue sprinkled here and there on the top of each of these pages, and as a result when opening it the first time it ripped a tiny portion off of the right hand side page of the Gettysburg Address. The quality of the packaging and little care the mint took in assembling this really irritated me. Glue sprinkled carelessly on the front of this? Cmon.
Three: Finally, the plastic air-tite case for the Professional Life penny had a long scratch across the reverse side (not the coin, but the plastic air-tite case).
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm breathing easy that the coins, which are the most important part of this set, are in perfect condition, but this is just an unacceptable level of defects to the packaging of this set. For only 50,000 total of these made, you would have thought that the Mint would have taken extreme care to make sure the quality assurance department would have overlooked all of these to make sure they didn't have any flaws like this. I'm very disappointed here, despite the fact that I'm glad I was able to receive one and have the coins, which are in perfect condition (thankfully).
Now, it gets better. When I called the Mint, the lady who answered was VERY RUDE and clearly was having a bad day and didn't want to be helpful at all. I told her of the problems, and told her I wanted them to just send me a COA and I'd call it a day. She tells me that this has been a common problem with this set and they've been receiving a lot of complaints. So what do they tell me to do? She says: "Send it in and we'll replace it with a different one." I tell her: "You realize, there were only 50,000 of these and they are all sold out."
She essentially then tells me that she knows this and that I should send it back, they'll put a COA into the set and send my original set back. WHY would I want to take a chance of doing this and risk losing the coins? The mint clearly sees that I ordered it, they shipped it, and the charged me, so they know I'm the right customer. Why they refused to send me a COA in the mail to fix the problem is beyond me. This woman was downright rude. If I wasn't at work at the time and had more time, I would have asked to talk to her supervisor, but I had to go.
I'm going to try to get a different person on Monday to see if I can get them to send me a COA in the mail.
Has anyone else had this same problem here on this board for those of you who have ordered this set? No COA / quality problems?
Let me know if I'm the only unlucky person here on this.
BTW, I love this forum and its good to be part of the copper / silver sorting community!
Cheers, Vox |

| well first of all welcome! we are glad to have you! The only problem i had with the three sets i ordered were the lincoln cents being toned. I hate you have to be put thru all this mess. I would call and speak to someone else. They are open today also so you dont have to wait until monday. I would make darn sure that your going to get a replacement set before i sent it in |

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you had a negative experience with the mint. I don't think they are known for quality control or customer service. If mine has problems, I don't think I would ship it back. I wouldn't trust them not to lose it and just issue me a refund. Who is supposed to pay for that return shipping anyway? Can't you also file a complaint online?
Consider yourself already lucky. You got a set.. even if not perfectly packaged. Think of all the folks that didn't get one. |

| There is always bound to be a few mistakes. But the only thing that makes the set special is the holder, coa, and the speach |

| Don't get me wrong. I am glad I got one, but we're paying for what should be expected quality. I am going to call them again today and see if I can get someone a bit more friendly this time. I'll let everyone know if they do something about it. |

Hi everyone,
I ordered mine about a day or so after the orders were being accepted. I was notified that is was 'backordered'? until the end of October. So I assumed I just wasn't 'lucky' enough to ge one, after reading about all the problems and limited mintage.
I didn't call, check up or anything ... just figured I misse out on a nice collector item. But, low and behold, I got a 'shipping confirmation' from the mint a few days ago (right at the end of October)
And today (Nov 2) I received this beautiful set in the mail
One other thing ... I'm not sure I understood the issue about the 'S' mint on the Lincoln Dollar, but mine is a 'P' mint.

I wonder if the U.S. Mint is contracting out non precious metal items to China. Like the plastic holders and cases.

Does that mean they will have lead in them? Lead is a base metal you know. Kurr sells it on this forum. |

So, as I mentioned in my previous post, I called the Mint a second time to try and get someone on the phone who wasn't a total useless / rude jerk and was successful in getting them to agree to sending me a certificate of authenticity. They told me that if it doesn't show up in a week to call back. I was still skeptical that they'd come through on this, but I just received it in the mail today! I'm still irritated I had to jump through these hoops, and still need to replace the scratched air-tite contain for the Lincoln Lawyer penny, but I think they use the standard Air-Tite cases for these from what it looks like. So, with a little more work, I'll have a perfect looking and complete set!
Also, if anyone reads Coin World magazine, the November 2nd issue (I think that's the date) has a huge article on the front page as the main article for the issue discussing this set and the problems people had with ordering it, as well as how fast it sold out, and how much people were able to sell it for on ebay. Some of the prices it sold for it says were in the 300-400 dollar range and higher. Insane. Glad I got mine at $55 + shipping :)

MAN!!! I just checked my account on US mint to track my order. Says it was delivered on Nov. 2nd. Such BS. I think my postal girl stole it. Very fishy looking person. Constantly on the phone while working like a donkey. She either stole it or placed it in the wrong box because she's a donkey. |
